All right guys, sign up here if you would like to be a judge for April. Don't forget to read the judging thread to make sure you understand the requirements. Questions? Feel free to ask.
Ok, judge away. Not sure what happened with that late entry. If it's in before the first judgment is posted, we'll let it in. Just post your judgments in this thread. Make sure you know the latest rules (they changed a little from last time). Permalink
I can tell it's Nidoqueen, but the shape is a bit off. I think if the head were a bit higher up it would help.
It looks blocky to me. Nidoqueen is supposed to be a bit chunky, but this model is just a bit too short. Everything above the torso suffers. If the head an shoulders had been one brick higher it would have been shaped almost perfectly, but that one brick makes all the difference. The spikes are good, but I'm not so sure about the tips. They should be one or the other, having two different tips draws too much attention and ends up making it look messy.
The slopes look great. The claws are awesome. The pink is a nice touch. I personally wouldn't have gone with the eye blocks, but they made me smile. Next time use fewer square bricks and more SNOT for a 5/5.
Being the first entry gets you some points. The pink really works here I think. I always notice the spot of color. actually I noticed that the ears weren't pink in Sugimori's art. Seeing your model made me think they were.
Crisp photos and good angles. The overhead was the most flattering one I think
Shaping the model better would have boosted your score up a lot.
Instantly recognizable. Shape of the body and head are perfect. The spikes are nice, but they could use some work. To someone who didn't know what nidoqueen looked like, they might be mistaken for fins or something.
Your SNOT is good, but I'm seeing a lot of the bottoms of bricks. It looks better from far away than it does up close. Specifically in the arms and chest. It also seems like you went to a lot of trouble to cover up studs in some places, but left the ones on the sides of the legs exposed. Also, I have to mention the front view. It's mostly the eyes, which look incredible from every other angle.
A lot of nice parts usage. Although some of the SNOT looks messy, it really does make the shape of the arms work in a way that few other builds would have. Claws are awesome. The head is put together beautifully, Once again, the eyes look incredible from every angle but the front. I don't like the red. It's not hurting your score at all, but I would have just left it out or gone with beige.
Few entries makes this category difficult. The back and tail remind me of things that have been done before. It's probably the same way I'd have done it, so don't take it too hard.
Your pictures are pretty good, but next time try to always keep the whole model in the picture when you're not doing a close-up. Also, use a lamp to light your photo and turn off the flash. The glare is distracting.
I love the shape. It's great. The the head and eyes are awesome and provide the perfect point for the viewer's attention. Pay more attention to the rest of the model. It's the little details that make this difference in the end.
I can tell it's nidoqueen. All the detiails are there. Even at that scale you managed to keep spikes on the back. ears are the right shape in the right place. Tail, legs, arms, everything is the right proportion and spot-on. Color is the only place you lose a point. The dark gray is ever so slightly distracting. It's worth the trade-off for sure though. Also I would have liked to see some white or gray on the head in the eyes or ears, or maybe on the hands/feet, but I'm not sure any of that would have even been possible.
The head is perfect. The way the bottom side of the clip is used for the front of the ear is excelent. My only problem with the model is that it looks kinda empty. I can see through the torso.
What can I say? Masterful parts usage. The alien torso as the base of the tail, The beige lower torso piece that I can't even tell what it could be other than a hair piece, the hand coming out of the head as a spike, the build of the head in general.
You pretty much get this just for being the only minifig-scale model.
One point for each Photo. I would have liked to see more angles. My philosophy (for MOCs at least) is that if you don't need to see it from every side then it's not worth seeing. I want to see your model from every angle because there's so many things to see. I can understand why you stuck to the left side, I can see the black right arm. No one wants to make a bricklink order for one piece just to get the right color. Still, I would have forgiven it if I could see what the torso looked like from the back.
So good. TAKE MORE PICTURES TRACY. Permalink
Alright… here are my assessments. I also used half points, something not done in previous months, I hope that's alright!
Pretty much impossible to mistake, looks fantastic! The only problem is that it doesn't have eyes, and I completely understand at this scale.
The torso doesn't feel quite right; it's possible to see through it. I don't mind the black piece on the right arm, but it's noteworthy. Other than that, great job.
Simply perfect parts usage, no pieces feel extra or wasted, everything seems completely natural.
Like I said before, parts usage is incredible. Plus, it's minifig scale!
Good pictures, but there could be a few more shots.
It's a bit of a stretch… the form feels very odd, and it seems out of proportion.
It's really smooth, which is great! Like I said before, though, the shape is a little off.
Slopes are great, especially in the feet. The parts usage was alright, but it certainly could have been better (maybe fewer rectangular bricks).
It's the same scale as Hector's, but this MOC was posted before his, so no point deduction there. Nothing else really to point out, a very straightforward creation.
Great job with the pics, they show off the MOC really well! However, there's no comparison pic! Wasn't it you who said, "I think a comparison picture should definitely be required. I will add it to the rules."? Sorry for that, but if it's a requirement, I can't let it slide.
From the side, it's perfect, the best looking of the bunch! But from the front… it looks somewhat strange. Maybe if the neck were wider, it would look more… natural from the front.
It's decent, but by showing the bottoms of bricks you make the creation look less genuine. Other than that, great job (ESPECIALLY with the head!).
The head is absolutely perfect! Great job with parts usage, the eyes in particular.
Same scale as Sam's, but nothing feels "stolen" from his MOC. It's just the same scale.
Some pictures seem a little dark, but some seem REALLY bright! Also, the shot from the front looks strange, as you said in the caption. I wouldn't have included that picture, it does no favors for your MOC. However, you included a shot from practically every angle, nice job!
