THE ISLE OF THORNS: Its real name is Koromar, but it is called the Isle of Thorns due to the harsh vegetation around the coastline. Boarding the island from anywhere but its main ports is tricky. Permalink
GEOGRAPHY: Koromar is a c-shaped island whose eastern coast is submerged at high tide. This means that “Lake” Silgarn is actually salt water – but it does not flow like the rest of the sea. Thick, thorny forests surround much of the Isle’s coast, except for the eastern coast where there is a large sea gate. A smaller port is in the north. The island has a lot of sandy beach which makes way to sandy soil with a couple of small forests here and there. There are a lot of chalky hills in the south of the island where livestock are kept.
The island is situated near Poliaz. Both islands are just off the southernmost coast of the Northern Continent. Look at this map to see. http://biosector01.com/wiki/images/1/1b/Matoran_Universe.png Permalink
NEIGHBOURS: Stelt, the Northern Continent and the Southern continent are the closest land masses to the Isle of Thorns. You can look on Bioniclepedia for them. The other neighbour is Poliaz, a small island which is culturally very similar to Renaissance Italy. This is where Gringat comes from. Poliaz’ toa will come to visit the island from time to time.
The last “Neighbour” is Korrothis, which sometimes re-docks in Lake Silgarn. This island is home to the ancient order of the Elemental Wave, an order supposedly founded by Mata-Nui himself. Called the Heartstone of the Universe, Korrothis was made to fly after Gringat became the Lord of Air. The lords on the island hold the responsibility of monitoring and keeping the flow of their element throughout the entire world. Permalink
CAPITAL: There is only one town on the island, as well as several small villages. Carekik is on the western bank of Lake Silgarn, and is the main place of residence for the matoran here. Compared to other towns in the Matoran Universe, Carekik is quite slum-like. Permalink
LAKE: The Lake is the Isle’s main source of fish, and the salts left on its banks are ideal for farming. It was formed by the mountainous centre of the island (Korrothis) taking to the skies thousands of years ago. After Korrothis left, the Shadowcaverns beneath the island where exposed. Permalink
SHADOWCAVERNS: Vents and tunnels within the metal shell of Mata-Nui himself, the Shadowcaverns are a bizarre, dangerous realm full of creatures that the Makuta did not create, that have never seen the light of day. Those that can swim have managed to enter the Isle through Lake Silgarn. The good guys from here are the Ak-Matoran. The bad guys, amphibious, tentacle monstrosities called Ja’kat. The two people are at war beneath the island and sometimes fights break out above. Ja’kat are not welcome on the island. Sometimes Toa will come to explore the caverns. Permalink
CRIME: (Ben requested this) As so many waifs and strays from other islands come here, crime is rife. Smugglers find it difficult to land on the thorny coasts, but this does not mean they cannot. In fact, because of the thorns most of the barren coastline is left unguarded. Stelt, a nearby Dark Brotherhood island, will often conduct business here, and Dark Hunters are often seen. Other unsavoury types may pass through while travelling between the north and south continents. Permalink
