"We have read the prophecy over and over again, brothers." The evil demon king growled. "It says that this is the year of the warrior. The one who will slay us." The three demon lords all knew that soon, if the prophecy was true, a hero would rise to defeat them and end their reign of tyranny. "Do not fear, brother, for not all prophecies are realized." The second demon spoke, his voice sounding like a million screams. "Yes, but we must be cautious none the less. Send our armies to all the villages. They are to kill anyone who fights them." The third demon finally spoke, "Brother, it shall be done." Permalink
"Um, sir?" The soldier called down from the watch tower. "There's something- no, things- coming from the trees!"
"What is it? What do you see?" The captain called back up to him from the ground.
"There are many large, dark figures approaching! And they all appear to have glowing red eyes!"
"What did you say?"
"Red eyes, sir. I think we may be under atta-" The soldier was cut off by the large spear that now protruded from his chest. He gasped before tumbling out of the tower, landing right in front of the captain with a loud 'thud'.
"By the gods..." The captain muttered as the alarm was raised. "Somebody get Reaver! The demon hordes are upon us!"
* * * * *
"Reaver, sir, wake up!" A soldier ran into the room. It was dim, lit only by candles, and silent. In less than an instant, Reaver was upon the soldier, pressing his Katana against the soldier's throat.
"What have I said about disturbing me while I meditate?!" He screamed in the soldier's face. Reaver was a tall, lean man. Dressed in his typical red and black armor, he seemed one with the night.
"You told us not to-"
"Not to disturb me unless it's an emergency!"
"We're being attacked by demons!" The soldier managed to say, though his fear of Reaver now surpassed his fear for the attacking demons.
Reaver almost seemed to twitch. Slowly, he pulled the sword away from the soldier's neck. He took a deep breath and stood up to his full height. "So it has begun. Come! We shall fight them off together!" Reaver shouted, turning the soldier around and shoving him out the door.
"But sir, What does this mean?"
"Lucky you!" Reaver laughed as he ran past a demon, cutting him in half with ease
"Sir, I don't understand."
"You get to be alive to see the prophecy fulfilled!" Permalink
"Soldier, tell me your name." Reaver spoke over the dying screams of the demons around them.
"Tell me, Ezekiel, have you heard of the prophecy?"
"Of course," he replied while deflecting a demon's blade, "Everyone alive knows the prophecy! A warrior will rise up from the ashes to slay the three demon lords and end the demons' reign over Maelstrome."
"Good boy. That warrior is our only hope to stand against the evil. And this is the year he is to be revealed to us."
"Yes, but..." Ezekiel stopped to pierce a demon's heart with his emerald-core blade. "Isn't an equally great warrior supposed to find and train this savior?" He mowed down two more demon soldiers before he got his answer.
"You are correct, child." Reaver beheaded two demons with one swift blow. "And for a long time, I thought that trainer was to be me. But while meditating, I saw the truth."
Suddenly, from the trees burst and immense figure with huge red eyes. "I have come for your souls!" His many voices screamed.
"No! It can't be!" Ezekiel screamed.
"It is." Reaver said with a new, grim tone to his voice.
"You're one of the three demon lords!"
The demon threw back his head as his many voices broke out into laughter. "I am THE demon lord!" His voices howled. Without so much as raising his hand, he flung Ezekiel backwards into a tree.
"Ezekiel! Do you remember the trainer I spoke of?" Reaver yelled as a purple aura surrounded him and the demon lord. Reaver was casting a spell that Ezekiel recognized as one of the greatest: The removal spell.
"Yes, but why?" He called. He tried to stand, but pain flared in his chest.
"It wasn't me. I saw it in my vision. It was-"
The demon lords many voices cut him off. "You fool! This spell will kill you and only return me to my lair!"
"This is my destiny." Reaver said softly, the grim tone leaving his voice. "But yours, Ezekiel, is to find and train our savior!"
"NOOO!" Ezekiel screamed, reaching out his hand to try and stop Reaver.
"I'll be back!" The demon lord's voices called to Ezekiel before he and Reaver disappeared in a flash of purple light.
Ezekiel sat with his back up against the tree. He noticed the demons were retreating, defeated and decimated, but he didn't care.
His village had lost its protector. Permalink
With Reaver gone, the villagers lost all hope. Reaver had defended the village for over a decade without fail. Eventually, the village elders thought it would be best if the people fled to other towns and started anew.
Ezekiel had assembled a small party to search for "the Warrior". Unfortunately, Reaver had done such a good job of protecting the city with his guard, there were not too many villagers up to the task. Two of the three men who decided to search for this warrior were in desperate need of training. The third one, who was dressed in black samurai armor, seemed to have previous experience in combat. Ezekiel dueled with him to find he had incredible skill with the sword. When Ezekiel asked his name, he replied only with, "X".
The other two were brothers; Pyrus and Plash. Pyrus was the elder and looked out for his younger brother. He demonstrated little knowledge of combat. Plash was also skilled, but still the weakest of the group. Though Ezekiel saw potential in all of them, he stayed in the city for three more days to train before embarking on their quest.
"When are we gonna find this warrior guy?" Plash asked while parrying Ezekiel's blade. Ezekiel twirled his sword and disarmed Plash in less than an instant. "When you three are ready."
"What about Mr. silence over there? Pyrus and I can search while you and the ninja fight the bad guys."
"You need to be able to defend yourself, brother." Pyrus told him. "Your allies will not always be there to watch your back. You must learn to fight on your own."
"Your brother's right, Plash." Ezekiel said, handing him back his sword. "But time may be of the essence. We'll have to train more on the way."
"Where are we going?" Pyrus asked.
"We're going to Rynth."
"You mean-" X began.
"Yes. The demon arena of Rynth."
Ezekiel would find and train "the Warrior" and restore peace to maelstrome. Permalink
