Hello, my fellow LOTRO players! Today is, well, an interesting day for LOTRO players worldwide. Turbine has just announced that it is going to be "transitioning into a free-to-play, mobile game development studio, and as a result" are "eliminating some positions". According to the official announcement from Warner Brothers, the corporate owners of Turbine:
"The Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online games will continue to operate as they do now. Re-focusing and reducing the studio size was a difficult decision for the company, and we are grateful to all of the Turbine staff for their considerable contributions."
This has had the LOTRO and DDO communities up in arms, with some saying that this means that within a year Turbine will become a full out mobile gaming studio and completely obliterate LOTRO and DDO. Others are saying that Turbine will keep the games running, but yet no longer update them and spend less time maintaining the gameplay and servers of each. Others of a more optimistic view, of which I am a part, think that this is no big deal and that all it means is that Turbine will be helping produce many upcoming mobile games, while still, as they said, operating the games "as they do now".
What do you guys think? I can see why Turbine is going mobile due to the skyrocketing popularity of games such as Pokemon Go, Clash of Clans, and Mobile Strike. I personally think LOTRO and DDO fans have nothing at all to worry about regarding this issue, a more brooding problem in my opinion would be the license renewals coming up for both.
