I just saw the prize list, how (if I win) do I receive the prize?

The winners and the prize donators will be invited to a private group, where they can exchange their adress or their e-mail adress and then the prize donators will send the lego (sets) to them.

The Round 1 categories have not been posted yet, the first round categories of the group will be posted on April 22nd, we were originally planning on posting them April 1st, but we didn't get the group prepared in time, and once the Round 1 categories are out, we will have a month for the first round... :D

I accepted the invitation. 1. Is it correct I need to build a Lord of the Rings - inspired thing to participate?
2. Why me? I never participated in a contest nor did I ever built a Lord of the Rings moc?

Thanks for joining and welcome to the contest!

1. Yes, it's all about LOTR and other Middle-Earth related books written by Tolkien
2. Because you are active here on MOCpages and we thought you might be interested in joining this contest. And from my experience I can tell that there were quite a few people in the previous MELOs who built their first LOTR MOC for the contest, so in the end it is always a surprise to see who will join.

It is "middle Earth", that's LOTR, the hobbit, rhe silmarillion, the children Hurin, anything middle earth.

The rules link was faulty. Check this thread-

Welcome to the 2017 Middle-Earth Lego Olympics!

You can find the Rules page here:
http://www.moc-pages.com/group_conversation.php?id=25974&topicid=105762

You can spectate or enter, whatever you like. I think you should at least give it a chance though, MELO is always a fun contest and at least for R1 you won't need to have much LOTR knowledge at all. This may change, however, in the later rounds, when the contestants will receive more specific categories.

EDIT: James was faster than me. :D

The minifigures are not really important. It's a building contest. A minifigure can be used of course. But a self-made minifigure is just as good, maybe even better.

I haven't ever built or owned or even touched a LOTR or Hobbit Lego item. I've only seen bits and pieces of the Hobbit, and only seen LOTR movie 1 (which I thought was PRETTY GOOD!). What am I supposed to do? I have only ever built Star Wars stuff!

We intend to give those of you who do not know all the LOTR lore easy examples to chose from in Round 1. You would have to ask the judges, but I think collaboration (in builds or in ideas) is not off-limits. Like I say, though, the judges will have to second that.

As Stucky already said above, there will be easy examples in R1 for those who don't have much LOTR knowledge. Also if you have questions, you can always ask the judges.

"outside help" may be allowed, but that really depends on what you mean by that. If you're planning to pay a lego professional to build your MOC, I would say no. Haha.

Haha. This may even be possible, since some people here on MOCpages share an account with their siblings or other relatives. But generally I would say that 2 people building 1 entry is the maximum, since the more people you have the faster you'll be :P

Yes, that would be ok.

We want people to build for this contest. I remember in one of the earlier MELOs we had an entry that was built for an earlier contest and on the photos you could clearly see the date and the name of it, so the contestant didn't even build it in the same year and of course that wasn't ok at all, since it wasn't fair to the other contestants.

Your case, however, is a different one. If you manage to create an entry that fits the categories of both contests well, it would be ok. But it still has to be 100% MELO and thus may be difficult to do. Good luck! :)

How will I know my category/ who I'm against? And for the qualifiers do I post my thing without facing anyone? Thanks again for inviting me, I'm very honored to be part of this. Thanks, H

What do you mean by not giving your adress for prizes? We can only send you a prize, when we know where to send it. Maybe we could send it to a friend of yours, if you don't want to give us your adress. But I don't think it will be a big deal since the only person here knowing your adress will be the prize donator. :)

I agree that MOCpages seems to be very vulnerable for hacker attacks at the moment, but another possible option would be that you create a fake e-mail account and then send an e-mail with your address to the donator's address who'll then send you the prize.

If you're worried about hackers, I'd recommend using a VPN. There's plenty of free option,s and if you're just looking to exchange info like addresses, free should work fine. Do some research beforehand, but there's absolutely no more secure option for passing details like that over the internet.

The user on the other end would be an MOCPages user that you set up a connection to, much like if, say, you did a Skype call with them. It would be no different then passing the info through an email or on MOCPages, except that if a third-party, like a hacker, tries to connect to the VPN to steal the address, then the network terminates immediately to prevent it.

But if you're not comfortable, no pressure. Just a thought for anyone who is worried about doing this securely.

That depends.

If there is a more or less clever coherence between the different parts of the build (like the one in the following build), it is definitely allowed
http://www.moc-pages.com/moc.php/427258

However, we don't allow story-towers or similar builds anymore. (Because they are only a collection of independent creations that someone put together in one build)

For my creation I'm building a brick built figure, which is a first for me, and I was hoping for some help. It is going to be slender and elf like. I was just wondering if anyone could give me links to creations or pictures of figures similar to that description that I could use as reference. Thanks!

How odd... I also started building my first BBF for this contest, and it also happens to be an elf figure! I'm open to any advice you guys may have.

So am I! It's not exactly going to be an elf, but I'm definitely open to advice. Any BBF masters out there?

By the way for you other guys, here is the advice I've found so far:

1: Use references and look at them often.
2: Decide on a pose and build for that pose. Don't build a posable figure since these often have wholes.
3: Build the smallest part (usually the head) first.
4: (This is in the Duh! category, but here we go): Be ready to use bricks in unconventional manners (such as SNOT and illegal connections).
5: Make sure to capture the main characteristics, these are more important than the details. You may find these by stepping back from your reference and seeing what stands out despite the distance.
6: Build a copy of your figure every so often in order to improve structural stability. Then, do further modifications to the copy.

Just some advice I read in a Lego book. I'm open to any more advice anyone has.

Thanks Stucky! Actually, those steps were basically my currently un-written plan for this build. I was hoping some one could just point me in the direction of a good BBF builder whose techniques I could copy and modify. I know I should start with the head, but that's the hardest part. Most BBF figures I've seen have heads too wide for an elfin-is figure.

Actually, I didn't learn these from personal experience. Like I said before, I'm making my first BBF figure. These I found in a Lego book with a whole chapter dedicated to BBFs and and interview with a good builder.

DO you know what the name of this book was, or who was the author or builder?

The title of the book is "The Art of Lego Design" by Jordan Schwartz, and the interviewee for BBFs is Iain Heath. The content is within Chapter 9, "Large-Scale Figures". (It's a good book, by the way, but there's so much one can just learn from the Lego community itself).

Thanks! I looked him up on Flickr and he has a somewhat elvish looking Spock character that might be helpful for an elf build.

I'll ask here too -
Hey guys, my brother and I are having some problems. So I posted my creation a while ago and logged off of my family's shared computer. My brother, snappinbricks, (who has a MELO entry) tried to log in to post HIS entry, but mocpages would not allow him, for some reason. he does not have a Flickr account, but I do. So can I post HIS entry on my Flickr and post a link to it here?

Since my entry was not entered until about 15 minutes after the deadline, I'm sure I've already been disqualified. I'd really like it, though, if the judges would tell me the show they would give it had it been entered on time, and whyv they'd give me that score.

Yes, it will be everyone against everyone. Then each of the 6 judges will give the entries a 1-10 rating and the best 32 contestants will move on.

Wait, we got 32 entry's, do we all just move on?

We're still discussing that in the MELO Judges Lounge, but as far as it looks now we'll probably let 32 of 33 entries move on, because everything else would be unfaithful to our own rules and plans (I know that R1 would lose its qualifying character then, but it's better than changing plans we've already made)

This goes to ALL contestants: What is YOUR opinion about the whole thing?

I think you should stick to your ground rules, if you change the rules you may lose some authority with people. But that's just my opinion. :)

The judges have made their decision now. 32 people will move on as planned!

I am gonna feel really bad for the guy (how do I know it will be a guy? Because I'm a guy) that doesn't move on...
