3rd Bio Build Off Athon "Guidelines and Discussions"

Stop right there!

I'm starting it right now I just wanted to open a topic of discussion for the contest. For those who would like to help out or just contribute their ideas.

First thing I would like to specify right now for the next BBOA contest.

All round themes will not be Bionicle idea or specify a specific way to build.

I wish to try what the MocOlympics has done which is non specific ideas. These in my opinion let the builder have free range with their creativity while striving to have it make sense with the idea.

Say a Judge wants to do a Titan round. Instead of giving size specifications and such they can simply set the theme as, "A warrior of Titanic proportions."
Most people will think the intention is to build a Titan but heck, someone like me may make a scaled down version of the Titanic and strap to legs to it with guns.

Or even "Zoom Zoom" classic commercial slogan? Lazy Judge? Nope it's to see what interpretation and emodyment of speed people can come up with! Or a big camera with a nice zoom on it.

In the end I just wanna try this out. Slightly non-specific vague ideas or sayings that people have to make a creation to fit what is said (not exactly fit what was intended)

I beleive this would bring in people who wish to test the rounds themes and be wacky, all while still showing great skill.

Peoples thoughts please?

"Open" categories are very nice to see because they give freedom of interpretation, but they present a significant inconvenient: the two builds may very well be completely different.
Now, a judge already has a tough job sometimes in choosing the best build even when they both fit a common description, can you imagine how's he going to do it if for a category, let's say "zoom zoom", a player present a technically sound and well designed runner, and the other a big freaking flying vehicle? Who should win? The bigger size? The best design?
Or will it rest on each judge's personal taste, reducing it to a game of chance between the two opponents?

I also suggest to open a side-group for big contests which need many threads to be played. It's simply more practical.

My last advice would be to drop the "athlon" part and try to come up with a name that doesn't recall another popular MOCpages contest.

I think this time I'll be able to be more involved in this, if I'm needed.

I do agree it would make judging harder and a strive for fair and balanced judging would be difficult, but seeing the Mocies and the trully entertaining and imaginative creations they come up with is amazing. Also I've found judging to at times be chance even with heavily structured rounds.
A different group for the contest isn't really neccessary do you think? This contest has worked fine in this group before.
True so a Bio Build Off would work better? I had orginally added the Athon part because the concept for the contest was to be a continuesly restarting contest for bionicle builders.
Hey we'll be needing judges just like always so your experince would be welcomed.

Yes, I still think hosting it in a secondary group would be the best option, last time the group was flooded by BBOA threads, and there was harly room for anything else. The Bio-Cup worked very well in a separate group, for instance.
You could post a thread here on BD with the invitation, starting date and link to the group, and then you could use it to post updates about the contest.

Yeah, the thing is that the BBOA's original idea was to make this gorup more active... Perhaps we're making it too big?

Maybe it's just that, I'm not sure about it myself.
All I know is that big groups are perfect to host small contests, and small groups are perfect for the big ones. Why stretch it?

I think we should have some ideas that are not very common. Like kraata mechs, for example. we should see what type of creatio theme is not very common and use it!
