The engine is the heart and soul its what makes a hotrod a hotrod not just body panels
I think these questions need answering by someone who knows the history of Hot Rodding (anyone?!) but I'll tell you what I know...
Hot Rods started as post war means of going quickly. Old pre-war cars were bought by the returning military men and engineers as they were cheap, and then fitted with the by-then-popular V8 engine. Body panels were removed for lightness or re-shaped for aero. The Hot Rod 'look' sprung up as a result rather than a choice.
As the craze grew it became a bit of a cult thing and now Rods are designed to match the classic Hot Rod look, as much as to go fast: To be honest you could probably out-drag a proper pushrod V8 Hot Rod with a good modern saloon car.
I agree the engine is still the heart and soul of the car, but to be honest, if people really meant speed to be the purpose of their Rod (like it was when Rods were first created) they'd fit a modern, and light, turbo engine and the bodywork would not look anything like a chopped '30s saloon car; it's more about the 'show' now.
The above truck looks awesome, but I personally don't count it as a Rod cos it's just a truck with a big engine, there's no 'show'. However, it's probably more in the spirit of what Hot Rods should be about (speed) than most modern Rods actually are.
An engine conversion alone doesn't make a Hot Rod - there are thousands of classic cars running modern power these days, but your probably couldn't tell by looking at them.
Hope that helps - feel free to agree or disagree! : ) Permalink
Well we are both right and wrong on some of this, Rodding its self was started in the early 50s by kids wanting to go fast and the Ford Flathead V8 was just the engine for it some kids would leave the car stock and dump a V8 in and others would soup them up so hotrods are more a matter of taste not just panels flames ect, So I think Taste makes a rod :) Permalink
Hi guys. It's not much, but I've added most of my Turbine Racers to the group. I think you should see them, but don't go off the first impression. they each have a flight propeller underneath! Permalink

Nice ideas. I'm afraid they aren't Rods though, so I've had to remove them from this group [sorry : ( ] - BUT - if you can make one in the style of a 1920s-50s Hot or Rat Rod, we'd love it in the club : ) I've commented on your MOCs though Permalink
I've bee drawing some inspiration from the ultra-modified rods of the late 60s & early 70s. I've got something special coming after my current build. I don't to give out any details, but, I guarantee there is nothing else like it anywhere! Permalink
