Well, my friends, I've finally done it. I've gone and created an after-school Lego program at my school. I titled it "The Lego Workshop" to get kids interested in learning new techniques, and it worked! I have 26 kids signed up now in two groups, each class meeting once a week for an hour.
So far, my format has been some teaching time using common techniques, then independent building time. I am considering several other formats, including building challenges and cooperative groups.
The Lego Workshop brought in so much interest, I actually had to turn people away to keep the numbers where I wanted them! I'm hoping to run another session in the spring. This class has been so successful, in my opinion, that it opens the doors for other uses of Lego at school, including for fundraisers. I have an idea for a Lego fundraiser that I may describe at a later time.
I want to thank Dave Kaleta and Dave Xandegar. Their advice helped me get started. My wife has done hours upon hours of organization and discussions that have helped me tremendously.
Please let me know if you want to know more. I would even be willing to send you my flyer if you like, or discuss any other aspect of the class. Permalink
