Doug's LEGO Site
by Doug Smith
Add to my favorite builders )

Hi, y'all! This is the LEGOŽ site for me, Doug, a twenty-something Georgian who's been a LEGOŽmaniac since the age of four.

I'm a frenetic builder. When the muse strikes and I get it in my mind to build, I have a hard time stopping. Eating, sleeping, bathroom breaks—these things become secondary. I once built the Imperial Star Destroyer kit #10030 in a 14 hour-straight marathon, during which I might have eaten twice. I don't know if I should be proud of this or not, but that's the way it is.

Until recently, I didn't sort my LEGOŽs. I'd dredge through a giant RubbermaidŽ tub for the pieces I needed. Inefficient, yes, but I've developed quick eyes for identifying LEGOŽs as a result. I have since organized most of my elements in a way that works for me, though I still dredge, and I still have that giant tub.

I like to build on science fiction and military themes, mainly working in minifig scale. A lack of focus in my "LEGOŽ set acquisition" has left me with an unfortunate broad range of colors; I'll try to keep the "Rainbow Warriors" off the page.

I use TYCO pieces. For those unfamiliar, TYCO (now a division of MattelŽ) used to create LEGOŽ-compatible bricks. There are some differences, mainly that TYCO plates are equivalent to 1/2 a brick's thickness, rather than LEGOŽ's 1/3. (They're also garbage for making good brick-to-brick connections.) Also, there are two versatile 2×2 TYCO elements that allow one to connect bricks stud-to-stud or base-to-base. I don't have many of these, but occasionally they come in handy. It may be against the LEGOŽ-building "rules," but there are no rules in love and war, and I refuse to make those elements sit on the bench.

After more than two decades of "LEGOŽing," I'm still learning and am by no means an expert on anything (after seeing the skills of builders out there, I think even my position as an amateur might be in jeopardy!) I hope for further growth as a builder and for inspiration from you, my Brothers and Sisters of the Brick, as I continue creating, one brick at a time. Happy building!
