Few vessels in nowadays navies have had such a long and difficult history as the battlecruiser-class. The request for a class of ships with high speed, heavy weapons, and high adaptability was first made in the years prior the Fall of the Commonwealth. These units would have been used for patrol duties and police actions against pirate bands, saving the more expensive capital ships for more important tasks.
With the Fall of the Commonwealth in 2227, Terran Starfleet found herself on her own, with no funds for research. As the political entity slowly crumbled, there were more important problems to be faced, and the development of this class of ships was halted.
A decade later, with a less volatile political situation, officers of the Denebian Coalition resumed the old project and produced the first ship designated as a battlecruiser, the DCC Sunstorm. This ship saw action only once, in the Iota Centauri Incident, where it was so badly damaged by EA forces that she was decommissioned and scrapped. That was it.
The battlecruiser had shown her weakness in poor armour, as she had been forced to act as a ship-of-the-line against EA battle frigates. Though she carried a considerable punch, she couldn’t withstand much more than a few direct hits.
The project was shortly resumed by the Spica Democracy a few years later, in an experimental ship, but as the SD lost the major battle of the Fomalhaut Gate in Deneb, the vessel was immediately converted in an auxiliary cruiser, and was abandoned when it took critical damage in Second Denebian Raid.
The whole concept of a battlecruiser was then finally revitalized by EA High Command in late 2230s, in the mid of the Border Wars. Altairans raids were becoming more and more frequent, and with the enemy forces in control of the Epsilon Eridiani system, right on Earth’s doorstep, the Alliance needed a fast strike vessel. Two projects were presented by Europa Industries: the Eris-class, and the Erinyes-class. Particoular interest was shown for the Erinyes.
The Erinyes is one of the fastest vessel in the EA Navy, and one of the most heavily armed. Sixteen railguns and two pulse torpedo launchers, plus two long-range missile bays, are more than enough to lay waste on any Altairan attack group, though the thin armour of this ship is a major weakness. Battle cruisers are for hit-and-run, not toe-to-toe. Iota Centauri docet.
