WW II U-Boat
During WWII the U-boat was Germany's main naval attack. This is an example of the type IX U-boat. These had an elongated second level that had an anti-aircraft machine gun. On the main part of the bridge is the entrance hatch and movable up/down periscope. The main deck forward the bridge is a 5 inch deck gun and anti-sub net cutter. Behind the bridge is sometimes another machine gun. There are four torpedo tubes forward and two aft along with a mine layer. The name U-701 does not have anything to do with the real U-boat, its just my address number. Believe it or not I was intending to build a plane, when an idea popped in my head( when I was smaller I was always attempting to create a U-boat, but only had "blocks" and never liked the way they looked) I could use these pieces to build a U-Boat! And instantly became excited!

I remember reading in the U-505 Exhibit in Cicago (where I'm from) that the deck gun that was replaced by the snorkal mechenism was a number with a '5' in it. I think it was 105mm.

the deck gun is not 5 inch, its either 88, 103 or 105mm the latter being around 4.13 inches. other than that...its a lot of detail for a small MOC. I'm impressed and I like it.

Quoting Architect of Mythica Excellent replica! I've actually been inside one of these (in real life) - the U-505 at the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry.
Yah, I live in a suburb of Chicago, and the U-505 is my favorite exhibit at the museum.

Wow, this is very good. I have a model kit of the IX/c Class. But its tiny. You could make a version of U-534,one of 4 surviving u boats.

What alot of people do not know is that German U-boats were really close to American soil. HOw close? you might ask, and I'll tell you, about off the coast of Florida. What does that tell you? Good thing it only came that close.
