DSB 1290 sitting in the Linwood shunting yard waiting to be scrapped.
Reason for building
I built this in attempt to recreate an NZR layout. This is my first serious attempt at a decent MOC. Please let me know what you think and how I can improve. I'm sure that I need to and would appreciate your suggestions.
As the name suggests this is based on a Mitsubishi DSB diesel shunting locomotive.
This one is DSB 1290 which is pictured below. This has been rescued from scrap and been restored for use as a small shunting engine in the Pakiwaitara coal mines. Currently a larger shunter is also needed. Plans to "rescue" a DSC class shunter are under way, as are the overhauls of 2 DC class locomotives. But as usual with these projects funding is the key!
Some historical and technical facts
Drewry DSBs were heavier versions of the DSA class with more powerful National M4AA7 engines and were Drewry's B2 model, built at Vulcan Foundry. As the National engines were unsuccessful, these locos were re-engined in the 1960s with Caterpillar D343 engines.
The three Mitsubishi DSBs were introduced in 1967 and worked only in the South Island. They were identical to the Mitsubishi DSA locos apart from heavier chassis members for increased weight. Two similar locomotives were supplied to the Ohai Railway Board. DSB 1275 (325) was scrapped in 1990. DSB 1290 (327) appears to have been scrapped around 1995 after sitting at Linwood for several years.
