Steam Engine
A Lego Pneumatic "Steam" Engine. Realistic Steam Engine Noises!
About this creation
This is a remake of my old model steam engine - I've only got a video of the old one and I haven't put it in my "videos" site yet - that is propelled by air pressure alone. It is effectively a two-cylinder pneumatic engine. The valves are controlled by the motion of the coupling bars which join the wheels on each side together. In turn, they control the flow of air to the cylinders and hence the motion of the bars again. See the pictures becaue it's going to be easier than explaining it all here :-P. Because of the valves etc, it only goes forward. However, it has a lot of torque and pulling/pushing power is only limited by the grip available to the wheels.

It uses three pump cylinders (external, hand powered) to provide the air supply. It has an air tank to buffer the supply and hence make the ride less jerky! Oh, and it makes "realistic" chuff-chuffing noises as it moves, due to the valves being 90* out of phase etc.

Overview. Note that cylinder cannot move.

Ahh... the propulsion. Black bar at the bottom is parallel to the ground at all times (because it is connected to the three wheels). Purple bar connects to the cylinder which is locked in place (cannot rotate). Red bar controls the valve. This setup is duplicated the other side but the black bar is connected at 90* further round the wheels (the axels connect the wheels on both sides together so that the pistons can help each other through their dead-spots).

I hold very taken care of your locomotive by the mechanical point of view, but takes care of more the aesthetics!! However a beautiful job stays!! Public also a video of your locomotive in action!! Visit my Homepage & send a review

Very nice! You should make it all black! Then it would be very realistic.
