The alien species used in the construction of XMs is a curious thing - it begins in a larval stage, before entering a pupa stage after roughly a year. Once it emerges from the pupa, it splits into one of two adult forms, which can then further mature into more advanced, perfected forms. During the pupa stage, the creature's abilities change rather drastically - most notably, it becomes capable of flight, as well as a more primitive version of the energy control demonstrated by the Ladja. As a result, a large number of XM units were created using the pupas themselves rather than their hatched forms. The result was the Kon, Crow's answer to the Streik Falken and a potent aerial force.
Kons are much larger than Falkens, yet seem to have the same ability as second-generation Baryonic Drive-equipped units to reduce their mass, making them as light as or even lighter than their counterparts. In terms of weapons complement, the Kon is like the Korol in that most of its weaponry is externally mounted, feeding off the alien's energy but not a natural part of it. Its most notable arms are the plasma rail cannons mounted on either wing - firing long, thin bolts of blood-red energy, these weapons have an extraordinary firing range. These are each complemented by more traditional gatling guns. The main nose of the unit is an extremely powerful version of the Peska's saber rifle, and is often used as an impact weapon capable of tearing armor in half.
For thrust, the unit channels the alien's energy generation into propulsion, giving it a respectable top speed - however, it does not match the Falken's drastically higher airspeed or turning. Curiously, it seems the unit is designed such that it can be ridden by a Ladja, allowing the adult unit to compensate for its lack of inborn flight capabilities. Data from observation of such a docking was used to modify one Streik Falken stored on the Arbalest during its journey on Earth, allowing the Kerykeion Mark III to use the fighter as a similar riding platform during duels with Pomfret Akumu. The Kon he rode was particularly notable, and was one of two units piloted by child soldier Kareita Afrit during the war.
It is unknown exactly how many Kons were produced, but all are believed to have been shot down during the final stages of the war.
This was an interesting project - it started out as an attempt to create a subflight lifter unit for the Ladja. During the development process, it went from just a box to the bomber-like design it shows here. As its name suggests, Kon is the Black Knight. Incidentally, because Ladja and the Mark III share similar feet, either one is capable of riding a Kon.
