M:Tron planetary defense heavy fighter / orbital torpedo bomber
About this creation
(ignore the main photo, MOCpages uploader is killing the image quality) My original concept for this was a planetary defense fighter that could be launched quickly from the ground, reach orbit, and carry out torpedo runs against space-based capital ships. To that end, the craft has 4 VTOL thrusters and 3 engines. It is armed with two cannons and two lasers on the nose, along with an automated rear facing turret for missile defense while setting up a bombing run, and a nice big bomb bay.
That is a load of crap. The real motivation to design this was because I bought the windscreen to fill out a bricklink order, then didn't know what to do with it.
I was trying to decide what colors to make it. Tried green but didn't like it, then thought it would look good in M:Tron colors. I know that the windscreen is cheating, but it doesn't come in trans-neon-green.
The main engine was pain to find a design I liked. A lot of the engine nozzles I see on space MOCs here are really detailed, with stuff sticking out all over the place, but that just wouldn't have looked right here, so I settled on something a bit more simplistic. It's hard to see since everything is black, but there are 1x2 log bricks in front of the gray 1x1 round bricks; I think it looks pretty cool.
I agonized over the rear turret, too. I originally wanted something that could pivot horizontally and vertically. I went through about 10 different ideas that all ended up too bulky before simplifying things. I like the way it looks now, even if it can't pivot vertically. Suggestions for a redesign are welcome.
Pic of the landing struts down. I'm bothered by the fact that the front strut has the curve facing outward instead of inward like the others, but I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get it down otherwise once I build this thing, and I couldn't put it all the way at the nose without making part of the cockpit really flimsy. Might change it but I'll live.
Lastly, a couple pics showing the bomb bay doors open with the two torpedoes in firing position. I almost built myself into a hole here. Took about 3 days to get the crane arm small enough to fold into the bomb bay, to get the bombs high enough that the doors would close, and still have the arm long enough to get the bombs below the fuselage. I never was very good with Technic.
I only ever watched TNG for two reasons. One was Patrick Stewart, the other was because the Romulan warbird was the most awesome looking space ship ever. I always loved that split-wing-holding-the-engines look, but never had the bricks to properly do anything like that. It was a conscious effort here and I'm glad it shows.
It reminds me of a romulan d'deridex/bird of prey, mostly because of the wings. It looks blocky in the thumbnails but it actually has a good shape, and I think it would fit right in with any other M-Tron set. I especially like the deploy-able bombs, it's a nice touch.
