CosmoTech Industries Scout Fighter
CosmoTech Industries is one of the most questionable starship building companies in Known Space. They have repeatedly crossed the line, or come close to crossing the line, of being found in violation of the Centauri Accords, which state: no civilian industry may produce or manufacture or sale any starship that can be categorized as a military vessel or used for military purposes. There is a lot of other fine point legal mumbo jumbo, but that gives the gist. CosmoTech Industries manufactured the Tri-Star scout fighter, seen here, in hopes of acquiring yet another lucrative military contract. It failed. At the time, the Terran Alliance was pursuing using standard interceptors for reconaissance work. CosmoTech Ind., then decided to still produce a limited run of these fighters, and sell them on the open market, contrary to the Centauri Accords. This very nearly cost them their manufacturing rights in court, but with the right lawyers, lobbying, and certain death threats against the prosecutors, charges were dropped against CosmoTech Industries, and the company was able to continue to sell the remainding Tri-Star scout fighters. This particular fighter, actually turned out to be one of the better scout vessels in current use. It was successful not because of decent scanners or decent scanner range, but because it alarmingly fast and maneuverable and decently armed. The Cargonian Empire liked the fighter so much, they bought nearly every one of the ships, and then purchased the design schematics so that they could be the only ones to produce the fighter -- which made enough money for CosmoTech to pay off the debt from the legal battle.

In response to both your wonderful comment and that made by Dan the Swede, yes, it is largely influenced by the Star Wars shuttle craft and landing craft. I have always thought that the assault gunboat was also inspired by such, so I thought I would make a very light, scout ship version. Only non-Star Wars.

You gotta wonder why people always go to such great lengths just to get a simple military contract eh? Nice job! (looks similar to the imperial landing craft ;)
