Mantis is a Lego Transformer Decepticon who takes a modified Apache helicopter form, built to celebrate the release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
About this creation
Mantis now has updated pictures. For those of you who viewed Mantis before, he has some new pieces in his chest and a few other cosmetic changes. Additionally, in vehicle mode, he has different wheels and can support himself without sagging. Now, let's get to the back story:
Back in late 1970, Mantis crashed in Nigeria. He was obsessed with the African wildlife, and took the name of his favorite insect, the mantis. He wanted to join in the ebbing civil war there, so he looked for a vehicle mode that offered mobility and versatility.
He took an experimental Bell Iroquois attack helicopter form for five years, until the U.S. Army began developing the Apache.
Mantis joined the Decepticons in searching for the Matrix of Leadership. Being so close to Egypt, he should have been on the cusp of finding it, but the Decepticons were not very free with the intel they had. Some Decepticons wanted the glory of finding the Matrix for themselves, resulting in misinformation and confusion in the ranks.
Mantis eventually gave up the search and furthured other Decepticon causes, such as sowing misery and chaos. He now searches the world for conflict and exacerbates it by posing as peacekeeping troops gone rogue.
"Decepticons, attack!" Here's the transformation. It's my favorite for its simplicity. First, the blades sweep back, and the base rotates to move it up the back. The tail fin also rotates. Secondly, the cockpit is opened, and the arms are moved into position. There are a lot of joints and rotating areas in the arms. Finally, the legs can be rotated down and unfolded. They have to spin in the thigh and the ankle areas. He's ready for action!
Mantis relishes the idea of stepping on people the way they step on bugs. Here's what you would see if he was thinking about doing that to you.
Mantis was a lot of fun to build. He went together really quick - my fastest yet. It took about a week of focused work (after the kids go to bed) to get him ready. Another week of tinkering smoothed out some of the problems I referred to at the beginning.
Mantis uses his tail for balance. I'm not thrilled about that, but at least he doesn't fall down as much as my other Transformers.
I looked to Blackout for some inspiration, obviously. They transform differently in the end, but thinking about the Blackout toy (yes, I have it) and the move character helped me figure out where to start.
I would like to thank Nichole for her help. After all, this was her idea! She even took the pictures all over again when I made the changes. Thanks, sweetie!

the only thing i dont like is his head and his chest proportions
Hey, I totally agree. His head came out too small and flat, but I was limited to the space within the canopy. And you're right about the chest area. I thought it was cool that engines came around to his stomache area, but they're too wide, and his chest is too wimpy. If he survives the MOColympics, I just might go back and redesign him. Thanks for the comment.
hes really awesome man !
definitly a good work and a very unique name
the only thing i dont like is his head and his chest proportions but i believe u can fix it ^^
oh and i really love his shoulder cannons
wow ur good... but wut id like to see is it being a little less clumsy/awkward looking in robot mode... not trying to be mean... ur like 10000 times as good as me... just a lil tip... BTW the helicopter was shocking... amazing transformation. would ya mind checking out my most recet mecha
Even for a rushed MOC, this could beat almost any transformer model out there. I really like the sleek design of both forms. I also like the insect-like look of the face and head. Definately looks like a transformer you'd see in the movie. Once you reinforce it, I'd love to see pics of it transforming:)

Is he in the movie or a made up character? I haven't quite seen it yet.
Mantis is not in the movie. All my Transformers thus far have been my own creations. I suppose that's because I don't have many G1 memories from childhood. My best Transformer memories are from the first movie, so that's what I've been building. Thanks for the question.

That thing can transform!? Amazing!
Thanks! Yes, it really can. I meant to note that he can transform in my commentary - if you don't count all the pieces that fall off. That's one problem with creations this size (mine, at least) - they're really fragile.
This is actually one of the best post g1 transformers I've seen. Both modes look absolutely outstanding! Great job on this guy...and btw, is he in the movie or a made up character? I haven't quite seen it yet.
