Mankind: A Downfall #7 The Great Collapse
The final installment
About this creation

-August 15, 2022-
The Garrison: We are out of food. Out of water. Almost out of ammunition, and things aren't looking good. We have no choice but to leave and look for resources. So, we made a plan. Everyone will leave in groups. The only people who will stay are Lincoln, Charlie, Archy, Jim, Jack, and I. It will be tough for every one else to find food. It has all gone bad by now, and the non-perishables have been mostly looted. I wish everyone luck, but our job may be harder. Given the lack of ammo, we will not be able to take out zombies at will. Instead, we must set up traps. At every entrance there are small explosives set to blow. We hold the detonators, and when a zombie comes by, we will trigger the explosion. Will this work? Only fate will tell...

-August 20, 2022-
The Garrison: It took five days for our plan to go wrong. Seven zombies were at the gate, and Lincoln was ready to set off the trap. He did, but no one knew what would happen next.

I woke up. No idea what was going on. What was going on? Where was I? I didn't know. The only thing I saw was a 40 foot drop to my death. Fire surrounded me. Zombies were below me. The only options seemed to be burning, or get eaten. Which end was more pleasant? I wouldn't know. Luckily, I never will. I was on a balcony on the top level. It had been detached from the garrison and was slowly falling over.

I got up, and knew I had to jump to the roof of the garrison. How? That was a long jump. I never jumped that far.

I made it though. Don't know how, but I did. My former perch collapsed when I leaped across.

I was thankful to escape with my life. But I saw something I did not want to see when I lifted my head.

Charlie, my good friend, was crushed by debris. I ran over to remove it, but he was breathing his last breaths.

I yelled his name, but he only said back to me, "Don't waste your time, John. Get out. The garrison is shifting. You'll want to be off before it collapses. It has been nice knowing you, but it is too late for me. Do me a favor, save the others." That was the last thing he said. He was gone, and he was right. I needed to leave. I was beginning to feel tremors.

I left Charlie, but I would never forget him.

Meanwhile, right below me, someone else was just beginning to wake up as well. Jack, had been woken up by the crunching and screeching of metal.

The first thing he saw was a friend in need... Jim Gardner was hanging from the catwalk that was just about to collapse with the rest of our garrison.

Zombies were beneath him, waiting for their prey to fall into their hands.

But Jack was on his way... The only way to save Jim, was for him to inch his way to the edge, for Jack to grab him.

He did, but the catwalk was creaking and lurching downwards.

Jack grabbed him, and he was fine...

the zombies below were not. The shrapnel hanging swung down.

Lopping off the head of a ghoul.

That was when I found them. You don't know how happy I was to find live people.

Not far away, Archy Willis, crippled by debris was just waking up. The ladder on the lookout tower had fallen.

But Archy needed to get down.

So he jumped down onto the hood of the jeep below and made his way to the ground.

It wasn't long, however, until he had an encounter with the undead.

Luckily, there was a pipe next to him.

The fight ended with the zombie dead on the ground, the pipe stuck in his skull.

Just then, we were suffering bigger problems. There was no way down, and the garrison was lurching.

"Did you feel that?" Jack asked, holding on to the railing for support.

"Yes I did how couldn't -"
There was another lurch that didn't let me finish my sentence. This one ended with us scattered on the ground. The Garrison that we had known so well for the past months... collapsed.

We were all around the garrison, hurting badly.

But we found each other

and then the zombies found us.

Jim, the only one with a gun, took out one of our attackers.

And Archy, who we didn't know was alive, came to the rescue, and killed the other.

Then we heard a cry for help. All of us were accounted for, accept Lincoln.

Lincoln was under attack. His legs were crushed beneath debris. He was immobilized, and a zombie was on top of him, ready to feast.

This would be no problem for us though, right? We had a gun. When Jim pulled the trigger, we did not hear a 'boom'. We did not hear a 'bang'. We heard a click. Like I said, we had lost almost all of our ammo.

The only thing that would save Lincoln was a miracle. And we couldn't count on that.

But miracles do happen. So do coincidences. A spray of blood came from the ghouls head. But none of us shot!

We all looked over, too see soldiers. We had no idea who they were.

They had rescued us. That was all that mattered. And they weren't Vlad's...

We acquainted ourselves with the mystery rescuers. They turned out to be from New Zealand. We learned a lot from them. Think about it. We had been cut off from the world for months. Years!

We waited for the rest of the team to return. They did. But not all of them. Seth was missing, but no one cared to tell me what happened to him. It was time to abandon the garrison, our home. We were rescued. It turned out that what caused the explosion was the explosives were too close to a crate of grenades. We screwed up, which led to the death of Charlie. I won't forgive myself.

This is what we learned from the New Zealanders.

Vladimir Tanner was defeated long ago. He had taken the entire world. All of Asia, all of Europe, and all of Africa was under his control. Australia was not, however. Australia and New Zealand started a rebellion. Vlad's army was too spread out, and his nation collapsed in months. Vlad was chased into the Sahara and never seen again. That was when the Great Search began. All of the rebellion set off to the Americas and looked for survivors. The campaign was a success. Many survivors, including us, were saved. We were brought straight to Australia, where we restarted our lives. But, never would we forget our friends who lost their lives to the undead.

After the Americas were searched, they were completely abandoned. The one connection to the landmass was between Alaska and Russia. Troops were posted their 24/7 to eliminate undead. I don't mind that I will never see it again. The memories are unbearable. But something deep down inside of me.... will miss those days.

-John Mitchel... A hopeful Survivor.

Wow, I've gotta say man, you really know how to tell a good story. You gotta wonder though, will the zombie revolution ever happen, and if so what would you do? (Personally, I would hide in a bunker, going out and getting all the LEGO in the world! =)

Quoting Captain Jerrod Hey man I'm sorry about the whole 'cutesy' thing, I just thought that if it's like the end of the world the sky should be grey or black. Oh yeah about that E-mail I had no idea my brother did that he told me last night before I went to bed. - Jerrod
hahaha no hard feelings, I get what you mean, but cutesy is not the right word choice. And I didn't think that you had anything to do with the email. You seem too literate to be associated with it. How old is your brother anyway?

brilliant comic one of the best i have ever read. 5/5 ...but one tiny little thing. if Tanner used nuclear weapons wouldn't there be radiation everywhere. Which would cause cancer, radiation sickness and stuff like that. or cant lego-men get cancer?

Seems I am going to be retrospective on this one. Ok, here goes: - 5 full points on balanced number of characters; - 5 full points on character details; - 9 points out of 10 in scenery: one less point do to the fact that the place looks kind of barren; - In the comic itself: 10 points: the appearence of unkown soldiers and their story really convinced me; - Although the zombie topic itself is starting to get overused these days, you gave it freshness, so: 9 points out of 10 in originality. Total: 38 points I think I smell victory in the air... Good work Jack.
