a working M1921 Tommy gun, with both types of fore-grip (Navy and pistol) and both types of magazine (drum and box)
About this creation
well, after a break of a few days (and the start of school again), i decided it was time for a new gun. this time i went for the famous Tommy Gun! i looked up the different models and decided that the M1921 was my best bet, as it had the cocking handle on the top, so i could have a symmetrical mech inside the gun, which was going to be crucial as it was going to be a tight fit inside the very slim body.

i started off using my normal odd-m system, but soon realised that a 3m for the pistol grip, trigger and mag release was going to be impossible, so i switched to an even-m system, but made sure i kept my side-split field strip system.

-working bolt action
-removable stock
-box and drum magazines
-'Navy' and pistol fore-grips (interchangeable)

the gun uses my new open bolt mech (like the G36K etc), which is good as the Thompson fires from the open bolt and there is no way that id have been able to fit my closed bolt mech in the gun, with its free floating, exposed barrel, and tiny reciever. it was hard enough fitting the open bolt mech in as it was!

i think the whole thing turned out great in the end, but if i got anything wrong, i know that JJ wont hesitate to correct me - looking forward to your view on this, Tom!

the gun, box magazine, pistol fore-grip, right side

same, left side

magazine removed

no stock

with 'Navy' fore-grip

'Navy' fore-grip, no stock

gun with all accessories (removed): 'Navy' and pistol fore-grips, stock, box magazine and drum magazine (both contain 11 bricks)

the two fore-grips

both grips have a pin that locks them into the barrel, the pin can be stored on/in the grip when the other grip is in use

the stock

the two magazines - box and drum. both hold 11 rounds, i built the different types so i could have the full range

the magazine feed system - as with all my open bolt designs, there needs to be a place for the bolt to slide past, but in this case, as the bolt is a proper bolt, and comes forward at the same level as the brick, the gap is so that the mag can be removed while the bolt is forward.

bolt forward

bolt retracted

pin-type fore sight

the M1921 style rear sight (whoops, you cant see it!)

aiming - through the rear sight, through the hole in the cocking handle, and lined up with the fore sight

the mag release - the most difficult bit to get right, as i had so little space to attach it. i eventually got it right, though the trigger guards rounded inside corners were a casualty.

the mag release button is that little round bit in the corner

my usual field strip

mech, bolt forward

bolt retracted, ready to fire

and one last pic of the Thompson

thats it - tell me what you think!

Good to see some clever mechanics being shared. You've created many wonderful working replicas, but I feel I must lay down the challenge of the FN P90 with the rotating magazine feed, firing bricks, not bands... I see no working examples on the 'net and would love to see one ;-) It would be cool if there was one place that shared the principles involved in the catches, levers and triggers of things like your designs. I tried some simple ones here: but I couldn't find a good way to share the details... It must take you ages to create these pages - thanks for that.

Awesomeness is quite a common word to describe this, yet it did inspire awe, and then some. To fit a bolt action mechanism in such a small space is great. I have tried to find a way to make a full auto brickshooter, yet only one, ugly prototype worked, and not well.

Oh, YEAH, Baby!! Nice rendition of a definitively classic firearm. Your various stock mod's serve to round out this model's sense of realism. Convincing look, excellent build, indeed. You got a Zoot suit for Halloween yet? - Huss Q.

Very good! I'm not sure really, but only the Gangsters took off the stock, right? You never see a war movie or a picture with a soldier without a stock on his Tommy. Excellent work.

There arenīt many things that look wrong, but the vertical foregrip looks a bit uncomfortable, because itīs a bit blocky. The horizontal foregrip needs to be one layer of bricks less high to me, but the main body of the gun needs to be one layer of bricks higher. The sights need to move one more stud foward, I think, and the cutts compensator is too high. But these are just little things, the main gun is awesome, itīs just very realistic, I just wish the stock and both grips were brown.
