My entry to Bionicle Display's 2nd Triathalon: Multi-colored titan category
About this creation
Veloco-Nui is an island inhabited by the Bio-Racers, a widely varied culture of wheeled beings whose only goal in life is to win the Artakha Cup, an award presented in the island's greatest race every half-century. Aesphor is one of the few titans alive on the island, and so has the advantage of both size and greater engine power, leading him to claim the Cup four times out of the last six races. As an indisputed champion in smaller races, the wheel-footed Aesphor now trains daily for the coming Cup, waiting for the day he will claim his fifth trophy.
So, this is my entry for the Triathalon's multi-coloured titan category. As I was casting around through my parts bin for inspiration, I noticed a metallic blue joint from the Super Battle Droid set from 5 or so years back. Continuing to scrounge through the box, I realized that I had a larger amount of metallic blue than I had thought, and as I looked, I also found some metallic green. I sensed another eccentric idea coming on.
Metallics. That's what I used for this one, metallic green, metallic blue, silver, and white. I would have used metallic white, but that's silver. A pity. The backstory behind the wheeled idea was, strangely enough, inspired by an attempt I made for MAOX's Infantry Support Mech contest. I started work on a mech with wheels for Greyhein's Anvil (my MAOX division), but never got around to finishing it. I eventually scrapped the project, but it was revived in this new contest (how fitting).
Here we see the legs, my fave part of any MOC ;) These particular legs took me well over 2 hours to design. They may look simple, but I wanted a way to make the tires turn, but also be able to turn in the holder, allowing for better posing, kind of like feet. While it sounds easy, I also wanted the tire to be able to move, which made it rather difficult. After an hour of experimentation with swiveling joints and ball-socket joints, I finally found a system that works, using a makeshift piston :D
Here's a decent shot of the shoulder armour. Officially, these are the thrust engines of Aesphor, which are currently facing forwards, in "casual" position. You may also notice rocket boosters paired on the legs, beneath the knee joint. I have a strange love of rocket boosters.
For some reason, his head reminds me of Optimus Prime's head in the movie posters for Revenge of the Fallen. Does anybody else think so? Ah well...
Here's another good shot of the shoulder armour. These metallic green plates are what inspired me to put this in the "Multi-coloured titan" category. Originally, Aesphor was going to be all metallic blue, and I was going to put him in "best original theme" for Bio-Racers (wheels instead of feet, and designed like vehicles).
On the back, we see the "fuel tanks", which provided the fourth colour for the theme (white). This picture also shows the spine, and kind of shows the "swivel bars", which I used to articulate the midsection.
Action pose! And highlighting the torso section, which took me a good while.
Here we see the power core of Aesphor, a crystal of solidified light, presented to Aesphor by Takanuva during his last visit to the island. I'm particularly proud of how this managed to fit in, don't ask why.
A final shot of Aesphor standing tall, highlighting the strength of the legs. Nah, I had to hold him up with a thread for this one :P.
A few thoughts
Thank you to Harvey Cu for posting the start to this triathalon, this has really inspired me to get back to building. Apologies for the bad pictures, I'm hoping to get a new camera soon. Also, metallic colours rule! :)
UPDATE: Nov. 6th/09
Pictures swapped around for clarity.
Don't forget those comments! Till next time,
