JoCo's Space Diner and Donuts, from Space Police Log 03.
About this creation
This is JoCo's Space Diner, as seen in episode 3 of the Space Police series I worked on for LEGO.com.
The difficult part of building this MOC was designing it to serve as both the interior and exterior locations. Usually it's easier to build the interior and exterior of a location separately, as I did with the Space Police HQ and the interior Briefing Room.
In this case, the fact that I wanted the diner walls to be almost entirely transparent meant that the set needed to be all one piece. The best approach in this case was the make the diner extremely modular.
Both the side booth and the roof of the diner are removable, so that I could easily fit my camera inside.
Inside the diner is a bustling business. The idea was to make a scaled-back version of the Star Wars Cantina -- a kind of rest stop for all manner of intergalactic riff raff, albeit a bit more colorful. Like the Ice Cream Stand, I wanted to again invoke that feeling of a '50s eatery. Ironically, I also found inspiration in the diner scene from Spaceballs. You gotta have a checkered tile floor!
Also, I don't recommend ordering the Bionicle.
One of my original ideas was to have a shot in the episode that paid homage to "Nighthawks", a favorite painting of mine by Edward Hopper.
I drew a lot of inspiration from this painting, especially in the shape of the diner, and I wish I could have found a place in the script to work that shot in.
I love jo co's diner! will you ever make any instructions?? I watch your videos all the time!! were did you get the transparent window on the front. I enjoy your buildings and I am looking forward to seeing new videos
