Suspension Bridge
18 foot suspension bridge carrying two lanes of tracks.
About this creation

myself with my suspension bridge!

This is probably my most prized creation mostly for its size. I made this creation in 2007 when I was 15 years old with the help of my two younger brothers. This was the second suspension bridge that I have made.(First one was about 10 feet long). It was a really simple design involving duplo blocks as filler. At the time I did not have the required amount of lego to build towers high enough. I had a large inventory of duplo blocks so I decided to use them. The string is actually just Yarn. I thought it looked more realisitic rather than just thin string.
The main reason that I wanted to make a suspension bridge was becuase I wanted the trains to pass each other at high speeds. I thought it would be sort of exciting and pleasing to other children.
When my family and I transported it to the Supertrain it had a major accident and all three bridges had collapsed on the way to the trainshow. My dad had driven quite fast over bumps etc and the vibrations had pretty much shattered the bridge. I was pretty upset but I was quite lucky becuase my friends dad (Bob) and a SALUG member named Albert was there save the day. In essence they helped put Humpty Dumpty back together again and we managed to save our layout!

I had a few other problems with the bridge such that when two heavy cargo trains pass in between the first and second tower, the bridge would sag so I could only have one light wieght train to travel on it at a time. This bridge gave our layout a nice touch and was very popular among other children. It was probably my best layout for a Trainshow. I have since disassembled 2 of the bridges but I decided to keep the last one for display.

Facts: Took approximately a day to build (Mostly strining the suspension strings) and about a month in and out to design.
Approximately 18 feet long with two tracks side by side.
Im guessing it includes about 1000 pieces. Im guessing.

Future plans: I stopped building bridges for a year but lately I have started a new project that includes a new Yellow vehicle suspension bridge. It will reach a span of 13 feet with two towers. Im hoping to include lighting and to have a proper main cable connecting the two towers instead of having individual suspension cables. The bridge will also be made of pure lego and no Duplo. I am currently designing it in Ldraw.

Anyways please rate and comment my creation!

it s very impressive! i m working on one right now, and, it ain t easy, and mine is just 5 feet long! yours does nt seem to handle the train s weight very well, as it bends a little under it! i love the idea of the flying plane too! lol! great idea!!!

I think I mostly like it for the ridiculous scale. Seriously, eighteen feet? You deserve a medal. About how much weight could it hold, and how bad was the sabg at maximum capacity in the middle?

Epic! And you were only 15?! Duplo is a genius idea for filler and I really love the plane flying under it.~H
