An American 'Standard' 4-4-0 wood burning locomotive.
About this creation
This is my MOC of an American 'Standard' 4-4-0 wood burning steam locomotive. I based it off of a 'live steam' 1/8th scale model locomotive that can be found HERE.
The MOC is track ready and runs really well, of something, I must admit , I'm very proud.

Profile. LEGO doesn't make inverted slopes in dark green (yet), so I had to use some SNOT to finish my boiler.

Back of the tender. I think the panels in the walls really add something.

From above. I had to make a sacrifice with the tender. Traditionally, the tender on this type of train would have 8 wheels (4 pairs). However, because I needed the motor in the tender, I had to choose between a very long tender to accommodate wheels and the motor, or a shorter tender and only the motor's four wheels.

Minifig eye view. I had wanted to put something behind the window piece to make it look more like a light, but I haven't found anything that fits yet.

Piston. I used a minifig wrench to attach the drive rod to the stationary piston. It works very effortlessly, though it does stick out a bit.

The tender. The 'logs' aren't permanently attached, so if I want to add pennies or some other form of weight to the motor, I can.

The cabin. I used panels to give it a wider look at the base. I eventually want to add dials.

The cow catcher. I'm very proud of it. It's built using flex tubing and minifig hands. The base 'A' shaped tube is attached using two battle droid arms.

The front truck of the locomotive is not attached, but rather the engine simply floats over it. This is necessary because, given the long nature of my boiler, the front truck travels too much, and would get in the way of the pistons.

The front truck really travels far, the entire width of the train, but it never gets in the way of the drive rods.

When I was building the engine, I invisioned it pulling these cars, and I think it looks really slick.

Here is my 4-4-0 and LEGO's black My Own Train set facing off. A real Promontory Point moment, dontcha think?

Where do you get the train tracks?
The tracks are official LEGO 9v train tracks. They have been discontinued, but the all plastic, non electric versions can be purchases from LEGO. |

I simply love this engine. Looks great. It will really boost your rating when you have working drive rods. |

It's always good to see another classic steam engine, especially one as classy as this one! I love your cow catcher solution and will have to borrow the design sometime whenever I get a chance to work on some engines. |
