About this creation
Designed and constructed in the Martian Orbital Shipyards for the aquatic people of Oceana Prime to be an Aquaforming Transport Carrier, the Latis is named for the Celtic goddess of water.
After a monumental Terraforming project which has taken 8 years the Oceanian’s new colony awaits the final component, a massive ocean which will cover 97% of their new world’s surface. Nicknamed “The Reach Around” by the Terran engineers, the massive ship will transport between two magnetohydrodynamic pallets the equivalent volume of 2.4 billion cubic kilometers of water in its frozen state.
To large for faster than light travel the ice, mined from an asteroid field near the Oceana Star Cluster, has been refined and purified to make the 27 month journey to it’s new home. The remaining 3% of the yet to be named planet’s surface will be devoted to non aquatic agriculture, trade and a large Terran Embassy and scientific research station.
The Ship itself is equipped with six light-speed engines, multi-directional stabilizing thrusters and a state of the art inertial/external dampening and shielding system designed to protect both the ship and its titanic cargo.
The ships command center is housed within an aquatic bio-dome that also contains spacious living quarters for the crew and every possible amenity they could need or want during their long voyage. Designed to be adaptable and completely self sustaining for up to 7 years, the vessel will have no need to stop on route to it’s destination at which point it’s engines will be refitted to faster than light capabilities which will significantly shorten the journey home.
The Reach Around marks my first attempt at doing my own photography/photo editing (I wanted to give my Wife a break and challenge myself further) and my first attempt at a micro space vessel. I decided to start with the maximum amount of cargo that would fit within the parameters of the challenge and see if I could design a ship around it. She may not be the sexiest ship in the fleet, but she’s tight and I’m really happy with how she turned out. As a bonus, she’s surprisingly swooshable and pretty much named herself on both accounts…
