Castle split in two (from Ronja Rövardotter movie)
The Castle of the Mattis robbers is split in two and the other half is overtaken by the rivaling Borka Forestmen.
About this creation
This MOC is based on the book "Ronja Rövardotter" (Eng: Ronia Robbers' Daughter) written by Astrid Lindgren: The book and the movie that followed it in the early eighties have become one of the most beloved scandinavian literature for the 80s generation. It is held in extremely high regard, so i have to excuse myself if i meddle with this iconic story.

The the book and the movie came out in scandinavia at exactly the same time as danish LEGO launched their castle theme. I have a secret conspiracy theory that the Ronja craze in the early eighties sparked LEGOs idea to make a medieval theme.
The movie isnt very much known outside scandinavia, with the exception of here in Minneapolis where their copy is played every christmas and is wildly popular. The reel is so worn that several scenes in the middle of the movie are destroyed.

At least it sparked my interest for the castle line. I have recently taken up my LEGO hobby again, purchasing some incomplete classic sets from ebay.

This MOC is made out of parts from 6073 & 6074, plus a couple of wolfpack sets and some forestmen from here and there. The base is made from Pick-a-brick pieces and used up pretty much every single piece of gray brick I own (and YES there is a mix between gray and bley, but many of the grays are faded and yellowed, so it would have looked like a big hodgepodge in any case.).

I have used the drawings in the book as main inspiration, especially on the lay-out of the castle itself.

The Story:

Mattis and his band of robbers live in the Mattis castle, in which his tribe has lived for eons.
The night his firstborn daughter, Ronja, is born, a terrible lightning splits the castle in two down the middle. Beforelong, Mattis robbers discover that their arch-enemies, Borka and his forestmen has taken over the other half of the castle.
The Mattis robbers have control over the entrance and main fortifications. The Borka forestmen have the warm and cosy housing areas, but have no entrance gate.

Borka also has a son, Birk, which is the same age as Ronja.

thats all i bother to write, read more here

Opener image: The castle seen from front, crack not visible, as it may have looked before the split

The split, called "Hells Gap" is visible in this picture. I built each castle part on separate baseplates for easy access. Wooden derbis is visible in the gap itself

The Borka forestmens part of the castle

The Mattis robbers part of the castle

The gate/portculli: a large wooden block that is raised for entry.

Borka (w beard) with wife Undis and son Birk

Mattis, Lovis and son Ronja. (Ok, i have assumed some artistic freedom here, giving Mattis a 70s-porn-style hair, sideburns and moustache, and Lovis is now a Blonde).

Skalle-Per! (played by C3PO)

Ronja and Birk tames a wild horse.

One of the many squirmishes between the Mattis robbers and Borka forestmen, which coincidentally are ALSO robbers, and robs the Mattis robbers of their loot.

Ronja lies down in a field of flowers. One of the scenes so worn that they are lost from the Minneapolis version of the movie.

Oh no! One of their victims have tipped off the evil, oppressive Knights (Knekterna) who chase a lone Mattis robber.

The Mattis robbers engaging in their core activity. Robbing.

The Borka Forestmen did not have a entrance in their part of the castle, so they were forced to hoist every item and supply by hand.

Following a duel between Mattis and Borka, the two tribes join forces. A bridge is made between the two castle parts.

Birdseye view of the split castle.

Update: The MOC is based on the book cover, with this drawing. Castle is barely visible in the background.
The castle is a very scandinavian style with just plain walls and no extra "decorations".

Cute design!! I realize your design is 9 years old. Any consideration to updating since LEGO has released many more faces and hair designs. Did you know? Ronja was just made into anime series. Studio Ghibili made a 26-episodes series based on the book and for most parts it is close if a bit slow at times.

I've never read the book or seen the movie but it's a really interesting concept, and a good model too.
