Okay, first off I did not originally build this for MOCpages. I had a presentation on a research paper I had written and created this for my visual aid (I involve Lego in school whenever I can now days). This scene depicts American Naval Commodore Mathew C. Perry's entrance into Japan. For those who don't know, Japan was a closed country up until the mid 19th century. No one (with the exception of Holland and China) had any successful dealings with the Japanese. Perry was the man who opened Japan to the world with the sighing of the treaty of Kanagawa. He first arrived in Yedo Bay (modern day Tokyo Bay) with two steam frigates and two sloops. One of the steamships is displayed above. I had very limited time, so this was a really quick throw together and not my best, but I still hope you enjoy!
About this creation
Perry's crew included the first two Blacks ever scene in Japan; they served as a special bodyguard to him. Here is one.
Crew member moving a crate
Crew member hailing Kayama
Kayama was an aid to the governor of Yedo, and the first to converse with the Americans.
Shoguns: These were a military group that basically possessed more control over Japan than the Emperor. There are two such warriors shown here.
It's Japan...I simply had to have a random Ninja hoping on the roof!
A log cannon: Because of their self-isolation, the Japanese had limited knowledge of gunnery. They often would make wooden canons just to look intimidating. One source has it that earlier on, a Japanese guard boat capsized in Nagasaki Bay and all the guns floated!
I was really excited when you invited me to join the LOTR Trilogy Contest. However,I 'm afrid I will have to dicline your offer, since I had an accident with my camra and, I don't know when I will be back and running my page again. Thanks!
Sincerly yours: The Green Hood
I think the minifigures are the best job in this. (I noticed some Prince of Persia accessories and bodyparts I envy...). I agree you have done things with finer details and overall appearance (Baker Street, Monk's Cell, Christmas Carol Tower, etc.) but do not discount this. I think it is a great MOC. The boat is one of those "I wish I had built that", things.
