Planetary assaults can be challenging when there’s no secure drop zone to unload troops, but thanks to the Suborbital Assault Droptank “Calypso” landing your troops is like shooting fish in a barrel… with a giant suborbital dropship!
About this creation
The Suborbital Assault Droptank (S.A.D.) C-I “Calypso” is a light assault walker armed with a surprisingly powerful array of weapons designed for suborbital insertion into hostile territory.

The Calypso is launched like a missile from a suborbital dropship and then proceeds to fall towards the planet’s surface. When it reaches a certain altitude the legs splay out to the sides and act as air breaks to slow its descent so the Calypso arrives intact.

As the C-I falls towards the planet its eye and plasma cannons aim downward; allowing the Calypso to destroy obstacles or simply fire upon enemy land forces.

While engaging in ground operations the Calypso often engages multiple targets simultaneously; in order to accurately paint several different targets at once the machines eye shifts up and out from between armour plates, allowing it an excellent view of the battlefield around it.

The eye can also slip down between the armour plates in an instant should it need to protect the eye providing a safe, if somewhat limited, view of the battlefield.

While relatively lightly armoured, the Calypso is provided additional protection from a pair of shield generators, one on each side, which protect the body of the C-I. Additionally, a small antenna provides the C-I with limited communications and radar functionality.

While the Calypso isn’t the most well armoured war machine, it packs quite a punch at medium and close range. The two independent twin-linked plasma cannons mounted to the front rapidly fire explosive blasts of energy capable of tearing infantry and armoured units to pieces while a powerful laser column located on the top of the Calypso provides a 360 degree angle of fire and when fully charged it packs enough power to punch through most heavy armours in a single shot.

The Calypso has a high top running speed and is able to climb rough terrain easily thanks to its long forelegs, but they also serve as deadly close-combat weapons; a quick slash from one of the bladed edges is enough to tear out a section of wall or rend a lightly armoured vehicle or mech open and a thrust with the tip is enough to pierce all but the heaviest armour plating.

The Calypso is an excellent option for combating infantry as the armour and shielding is enough to withstand most small anti-armour weapons, the rapid fire plasma cannons are more than enough to decimate ground troops and the bladed legs can devastate cover to expose entrenched infantry.

You may remember this little guy from my Simulant Soldiers MOC, seen here making a cameo with his hover bike that’s a part of something I’m still working on.

(Creator’s Note: This MOC was made as an homage to my cat Calypso, seen in my Warhawk II MOC. She was hit by a car a few weeks ago and after four surgeries and one debt-inducing vet bill is making a full recovery. She may only have three legs, but she’s a tough nut to crack just like this mech.)

(Creator’s Addendum: The inspiration behind the design comes mainly from the Brotherhood of Nod from the Command and Conquer Tiberium saga and novels such as War of the Worlds. Hail Kane!)

Very intimidating looking. Sleek, yet powerful.

Wow! This is something my brother would make if he didn't stop using legos, because he likes droids with one eye and long legs. Very useful and neat.

Awesome! The shape is very unusual, but very functional. The details are great, specially the "eye".

Nicely done, looks very deployable. Is it for the Dynamo? I would hate to fight a group of theses without a fully armed AEGAKS or ARTCS. ^Blub^
