Altmode: cybertronian crate
Bio: Grotesque's robot form is an alien beast of unknown origin. His alt mode though is a common cybertronian storage crate. You frequently find Grotesque hiding in darkened storage bays waiting for his prey to walk past.
Weakness: While his altmode is capable of rolling, it's mobility is difficult to control, forcing him to remain static for long periods. This can cause his joints to freeze up, slowing down his transformation.
Weapons: Grotesque favours his titanium claws and spines as his primary weapons, since they require him to be up close, close enough to see fear in his victims before they perish.
Ok I think some back story here is in order. I've been seeing some toys all over Spain, recently for an anime and board game I'd never heard of before "Bakugan". I was intrigued by these little figures that turn from boxes and spheres into beasts, and thanks to magnets, they do it without human intervention?!
The idea of turning a cube or sphere into a robot isn't new, Takara were doing "egg bots" and Bandai "Rock Lords" back in the 80's.
I was curious to tackle the engineering challenge of creating something like this with Lego. My initial thoughts however didn't pan out too well, mostly due to clearance issues. A perfect cube is possible, but putting the limbs inside requires space, and that means anything under 6 studs wide is going to be a bit of a squeeze.
This is only my 3rd attempt (the first 2 weren't technically cubes or spheres and to be honest not that good. Now I have figured out how to hinge a cube, I may play with the concept a little to try and get a design that is a little less studded and a little more recognisable in robot mode.
