This rancor was constructed on Dathomir by Trixx Sabon who is believed to serve the Galactic Empire at one point in his life. The rancor was supposed to be designed as a mechanical attraction in an amusement park on Coruscant. After being covered in rubber to appear to be a giant rancor, this machine was ready for the park.
One day the rancor started malfunctioning and walking around the amusement park "accidentally" knocking over rides and destroying buildings; the park owner eventually gave the orders to have the rancor immediately destroyed but defensive forces quickly realized it was built for combat.
What seemed to be an unnecessary feature which concerned park officials in the first place, the rancor was equipped with an AI computing system and razor sharp teeth and claws.
The steel covering its body was forged to reflect blaster fire and withstand extremely hot and cold temperatures.
This machine still functions as a chemoheterotroph; it ingests food through it's mouth, and disposes of waste through two compactors located under the tail. It's arms each hold a large speaker which blasts out ferocious rancor calls; this feature was required to serve it's purpose at the amusement park.
To aid in energy generation and storage, the tail was plated in high efficiency solar panels to constantly supply the rancor with a limited amount of electricity.
The mechanical rancor is equipped with eight rocket-propelled Class-A Thermal Detonators to destroy large ships and armored vehicles in it's way.
Here you can see the rancor towering over a bone-weilding jedi.
Here is my second version of the Mechanical Rancor. If you're wondering where the first version is, it met the fate of my hardwood floor before I snapped any photos; after months of grieving I salvaged what I could from the rubble and rebuilt. I guess this could fit into my "Militarized Star Wars" theme, but I don't feel like it really belongs.
This was a hard build to approach, rancors are not easy to sculpt out of plastic bricks. I would have liked to build an actual rancor (and not a mechanical one) but almost all of my brown pieces fit into just one sandwich bag, so to go big I had to use my massive collection of dark bley.
After wrestling with my CATALYST and trying to get something that heavy to balance and stand up, I abandoned the AT-AT joints for the most part in this build and used a more technic approach with gears to provide a fixed, yet posable, leg orientation.
I was really happy with how the face turned out, the rest of it still needs some work, but I doubt I'll revisit it anytime soon. That being said I hope you enjoy it!
What a creation. What an idea. This is what I like! I mean everyone is full of SW creations that are a slight modification of a set. This on the other hand is creative to the bone! Well done! I love the jaws!
As with your last VTOL aircraft, this thing is astounding in it's detail and form. Yep. Looks like a Rancor...and a Mechanical one at that. I see you used that excellent curved shape on the lower spine. I think a similar shape was used in that aircraft. It's fascinating! I can't wait until I have some time to build again. I have got to play around with that shape. Great work! Attack!

I-N-S-A-N-E!!!!! I think this, deserves MOTD, right off the bat!!!!! E-X-C-E-L-L-E-N-T!!
You know, one thing I never understood about jedy is why they feel the need to completely destroy droids or other machinery when they can use the Force to simply pull a cable or push an inappropriate button somewhere.
This is great! First of all making it a robot as an excuse for not having enough browns led to a genius creation. It reminded me of the Mecha-beasts from one of the Star Wars novels where some Sith fused animals and machines to create an army, one was a rancor with a gun for an arm. Great work on the head and the little robotic details that really help this MOC stand out. The theme park story was great for a laugh too. Keep up the good work.
Hmm, think it's possible there are two Rancors here? I feel sorry for the people who were suposed to get the militarized one... noises just can't kill people on the battlefield.
Very nice and detailed moc.
Zane, this is very cool. This rancor is definitely a difficult build. i love the tecinque you used to make the mouth open and close. This just adds to the evidence as to why you are one of my favorite Star Wars builders
DUDE! This is one of THE coolest things I've ever seen! As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I thought: "kinda looks like something I would think up." THanks for the dedication:) I'm glad you didn't just build a "real" Rancor. The mech idea is fresher and allowed you to add some nice details, specifically, the fins on the top and back, the shoulder plates, and those neat looking thruster thingies on the back. I also like the nose and chest/rib area. In fact, I can't find a part of this I DON't like!
