The first Bond villain, in the first evil lair.
About this creation

Dr No was the first James Bond movie, released in 1962, it not only introduced us to Sean Connery as our beloved 007, but also gave us the mysterious master villain Dr No. This leader of SPECTRE and metal handed man created a large base on the Jamaican island of Crab Key and set about destroying the young US space program. So, no it’s not a world conquering plan, but hey got-a start somewhere.

Using a radio wave weapon, Dr No destroyed various US rockets that were launched from Cape Canaveral, and James Bond was sent to stop him. So after failing to kill Bond with a poisonous spider, and gullible henchman, Bond managed to break into the lair of Dr No, get captured, break out, and then save the day. Sad. Simply sad. Another great devious plot failed by the do-gooders.

So for my entry in the Ultimate Bad Guy Hideout Contest, I decided to recreate the lair of Dr Julius No, and emphasize some of the more action packed moments.

I started by watching Dr No, as well as look at pictures of the doctor’s lair to get a picture in mind of what to build. And I’m going to tell you now, the engineer of this place should be fired—or at least deported. For some reason, Dr No thought it wise to place his nuclear reactor in the same room with the radio weapon controls, but whatever—his funeral.

At least the lair is well placed. It’s underwater, or partly underwater, or above ground or something; the exact location of the reactor/radio room seems unclear in the film. This obviously makes it hard for outsiders to get in, that and the Dragon Tank.

Some of the requirements of the challenge were to include a escape plan for the good doctor, despite the fact that he seem to have no real plan whatsoever in the movie. Thus I gave him a speed boat, as they were featured as guards of Crab Key island’s coasts. Also No is escaping with gold for some reason—why not?

So I hope you like my version of the Lair of Doctor No.

Here James Bond finds an entrance to the lair in the jungles of Crab Key island. It leads into the base from a hidden door.

A picture of Professor Dent outside the lair of Dr No. He’s the minion who sends the spider into Bond’s hotel room, and is ultimately shot and killed by 007.

This is where the secret entrance leads…

Dr No and some of his minions at the controls of the radio weapon…which is in the reactor room for some reason.

Here is the poisonous spider from the film that is used to try and kill Bond. Obviously it fails, and is smashed with a shoe, but I thought it would be fun to add it into the MOC. Even though it was an after thought, the placement and location turned out great.

Bond behind you! LOOK OUT!

007 manages to sneak past and get to the stairs to the second level with the controls for the reactor. Also here’s some more shots of the controls.

This is the dish Dr No uses to send radio waves to destroy the US Rockets. Nothing too exciting, but it is needed for his master plan.

Any who, Bond makes it up the stairs and secretly turns the controls to the danger zone, which apparently immediately starts a meltdown of the facility…yes this did happen in the film.

Dr No racing to fix the controls and to stop the spy, while his minions run in circles with no hope of being helpful. At this point in the film, which is like ten minutes from ending, everyone seems to just forget the plan and hike it out of there, except Bond and No of course.

Dr No jumps into action to fight Bond and save his master plan from disaster…which ironically creates disaster.

One of the more useless things in the lair of Dr No is the elevator that lowers into the boiling water of the reactor. Really Dr No? You did not see this one coming? Well Bond and Dr No began a fistfight above the pool of boiling water, and of course they fall onto the elevator which begins lowering. Bond is able to escape because of his ability to have hands, while Dr No with his mechanical non-gripping hands, cannot clime out, and is boiled to death in his own reactor.

You can see a clip of the fight and death of Dr No here. You can also see some of the lair on film, or look at the picture I used for reference.

Now I stray from the film to make more things happen. Here for instance is a random trap door that you can find at any decent evil lair.

If Dr No had escaped in the film instead of deciding to fight Bond, he’d most likely leave the lair from a trap door. One of the control panels on the walls of the reactor/radio room can be lifted up, leading to the docks outside the lair.

This is the simple speedboat I built as an escape vehicle for Dr No, which is equipped with a generic crate of gold and a powerful machinegun.

NO! ME Gold! This picture also brings into question how Dr No would even be able to drive the boat with is metal hands that have limited movement. But oh well, this is probably why they killed him off.

Dragon Tank

This is a simple build of the Dragon Tank which is used to scare off intruders on Dr No’s island. It was more of a bonus build as the tank, which was actually a modified tractor in the film, cannot fit on the outdoor section of the lair.

These are the characters included in the MOC. There’s three minions of Dr No, Professor Dent, James Bond, and the mastermind himself, Dr No. I decided to dress Bond in his wet suit from the beginning of Goldfinger, since I find it to be one of the most iconic images of 007, also everyone would be wearing white otherwise. Dr No is very simple, like in the film, and has black hands, representing the robotic claw/hands he has.

Final thoughts:
I’m actually very pleased on how this turned out; in terms of scale, general accuracy, and to the fun nature of it. I really like the inside/outside views, and especially the jungle entrance. Hope you liked it!

JUDGING: First, I'm not completely sure this entry as is, meets rule 2 (traps). The dragon tank would probably fit the rules, but it was added as an afterthought and not into the actual MOC. The spider is also iffy IMO. Moving to the ratings though: Build: 4 (Nothing too complex, but quite accurate to the movie). Photos: 3 Originality: 4 (Since this was based on the movie- quite well, I might add- it isn't really original, except the escape, which I thought was quite clever. Therefore, I couldn't give too high marks. Honestly, if this was for a movie or Bond competition, it would have done better. I like the MOC, probably more than the others, but not for the way this competition was set up). TOTAL: 11

Quoting JS Can Great work, but I am going to have to give you a 0 for leaving out a scene with Honey Rider in the decontamination chamber.

Great entry! It's been quite some time since I've seen the movie, so I don't remember all the details, but I can tell you did a very good job recreating the final scenes.
