The Quarter
Dr. Halsey and Lieutenant Keyes use a flip of a 21st century American quarter to test how lucky subject John-117 is.
About this creation

This Vignette is based on chapter two of the novel Halo: The Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund.

"What's the game?"

"It's very simple. I toss the coin like this. Next time, though, before it lands, I want you to tell me if it will fall with the face of the man showing or with the eagle holding the arrows."

"I got it."

Dr. Halsey picked up the quarter. "Ready?"

John gave a slight nod.

She tossed it, making sure there was plenty of spin.

John's eyes watched it with that strange distant gaze. He tracked it as it went up, and then down toward the ground - his hand snapped out and snatched the quarter out of the air.

He held up his closed hand. "Eagle!" he shouted.

She tentatively reached for his hand and peeled open the tiny fist.

The quarter lay in his palm: the eagle shining in the orange sun.

Was it possible that he saw which side was up when he grabbed it...or more improbably, could have picked which side he wanted? She hoped the Lieutenant had recorded that.

Built for Category 2 in the Send Me Out ... With A Bang contest in the LEGO Halo group on Flickr.

Figures from left to right: John 117 (I know he's too tall for a six-year-old, but I needed the ripped pants print), Lieutenant Keyes with Halsey's datapad and his grandfather's pipe, and Dr. Halsey with the quarter and purse.

Haha! Very cool to find someone else who's read the books. Great rendition.

The pipe is amazing, and the vig's base is very nice.

Love this. The way you did the pipe was brilliant. The vig displays the scene in the book quite accurately. There is even blood on the hill that he was standing on. Very well done. 4/5! ~Stay green

Ah, yes, I see, I read the book twice, although the pic slightly confused me. John in this pic looks more like a John-117 without his armor, more than John at age six. I understand the resource problem in creating a great diorama. This one is nine out of ten in my opinion.

Quoting Nathan Flynn Very cool! Although, he was not whirring a hat in the book... Really great!
I'm not sure if you are familiar with Halo, because Dr. Halsey is a woman. She was wearing a sun hat to go with her civilian disguise.

I've read the book, too, and in my opinion your work here goes very well with the text. Though, a white hand would look more like the pipe Keyes carries around in Halo - Combat evolved. Good luck!
