Remote control electric outboard motor gunboat
About this creation
This is my fourth version of an electric outboard motor; it is functionally similar to the third version but the rudder was eliminated in favor of rotating the propeller-electric drive unit to steer the ship (which is how a real powerboat steers). Like the previous version, the steering motor is geared down by two 40 tooth gears. The steering gearbox was redesigned using the newer studless technics beams/axle components - the major challenge was to keep the steering mechanism as compact as possible. I also added a manual override steering wheel (yellow wheel on top) which can be used to test the steering mechanism. The bevel gears grind and dont mesh as nicely as I'd like. The propellor drive motor is more exposed in this design - but the lego M-motor is positioned higher than previous versions. For fun I kept the stablizers and added a 1 inch gun with a gunner at the ready, a radar dish, and a radio antenna.

Keeping the overall weight/displacement of the ship low and keeping the height of the ship low helps wih the center of gravity and makes the ship more stable. Too much weight on the thop makes the ship unstable and may cause t to tilt to one side and sink.
