COOL CITY by Sean Kenney - A BOOK REVIEW - (Just like a book report!)
I waited for this book to come out, since I had a preview of it at Sean's Studios this May. It was worth the wait! It like his other two books on Vehicles and Robots is spectacularly done. I will give you a picture by picture review of the best aspects of this book, his newest! But that will come when I do the dialogue phrase. Enjoy the pictures for now and look how I interspersed tem with the pics I took this May at Sean's LIC Studio!
About this creation

For one year I will honor, remember and respect the victims of 9-11. Each of my creations will have a 9-11 memorial starting off the page. I'd like to give a big handshake, hug, kiss to all the people here on MOCpages that remembered by creating WORLD TRADE CENTER buildings done in LEGO you too honor the fallen of 9-11 GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU!

I thought what a great way to start this review then to introduce you to Mr. Sean Kenney, a picture I took of him at his Long Island City, New York Studio. He is in the gallery that displayed his work!

The front cover of the book already takes you in. You'll know the ideas within will help inspire you to make your city grand! so hop on the bus and let it take you inside!

The back cover introduces you to Sean, gives you FUN FACTS about him and plugs his other two books: COOL CARS & COOL ROBOTS!

Here's how it all begins --- with just one brick. This is one of Sean's many brick supply drawers, grab the flag of your choice and wave it! And let's examine what COOL CITY has to offer!

At the entry desk of his studio, visitors were given a sneak-peek of the book and given a sheet to sign and add their email address to be notified of when the book would come out. Note it came out on September 13th instead of OCTOBER as the sheet notes!

What a great theme for the book: THE CITY IS A GREAT PLACE TO BE! No matter whether yo come from a large city like New York City or a small one like Canton, Ohio cities are places we call H O M E!!!

You'll see my "SIG-FIG" from time to time showing you some of the pages. This is the book's opening page!

Some of the visitors thumbing through the advance copy of Sean's newest book COOL CITY!

Published by: Christy Ottaviano Books (a division of Henry Holt and Company LLC., New York 2011 $12.99 list price)ISBN978-0-8050-8762-8 PLEASE NOTE: LEGOŽ, the brick configuration and the minifigure are trademarks of The Lego Group, which does not sponsor, authorize, or endorse this book.

One of the "coolest" pages of COOL CITY a page of S T I C K E R S!!! Sean uses them in his book and the guide mini wears the RED ROCKET SHIP sticker! I am just wearing, however, my I Love NY shirt!

A two page presentation of Sean's CHRYSLER BUILDING!

...AND A CLOSE-UP of the ground floor!

The Chrysler Building in person with Sean and me in his LIC Studio, note the size and scale of it!

Rocket Red, our guide takes a picture of Sean's MACRO CITY. Sean will show us step by step just how he created it!
It reminded me of the New York City Pavillion at the 1964 NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR. New York's 5 boros were recreated painstakingly by artists who miniturized the whole city! You walked on a catwalk and at certain points you could take pictures and/or push buttons to light up your neighborhood! I wonder if Sean got his inspiration for this from that display!?!

Sean shows us how the FIRE HOUSE was done...

...and here not only the firetruck but other MACRO Vehicles as well.

I am giving you a "tease" of just how Sean built a MACRO EMPIRE STATE BUILDING (step 4) want to see more?
Get the book it's worth every penny - all 1,299 pennies (plus tax)(lol)

Sean also gives us ideas for furniture as well after all we do not want our minifigures living in bare homes!
Here a dresser and a desk with lamp!

And here we see a visitor right on the page this was taken!

He even adds "street bling" like this pay phone...

...and a newspaper box and parking meter did you think your minis park their cars for free?

This is one of my favorites because of the simplicity of design - FLOWER BOXES for our windows!
This is Sean at his best - detail and using very few pieces to obtain it!

A brother and sister were kind enough to pose for me with this photo of the two of them enjoying an apartment house with WORKING ELEVATOR! Thanks goes out to their parents for letting me photograph this and documenting just how much fun "kids" of all ages will enjoy this book! Next fllor please...

A close up with ROCKET RED!
Curious to see just how Sean accomplished this with NO axels nor sliding plates?
I could show you or maybe I won't!

Ok here's a big hint right from the pages of COOL CITY - see if you could figure it out!

This picture of the interior of a convience store blew my mind! Why? Because look in the upper left hand corner - Sean includes a newspaper stand - one that I included in my SELECT FOODS MOC right here on MOCpages! GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE!!!:) The next picture will prove "it's more than just buildings!

Here's the interior of my SELECT FOODS MOC right infront of the soda machine is the newspaper stand. This is a good example of the LEGOŽ word SEAN did: IMAGINATION once used it's surprising just how many people can come up with the same idea. And IMAGINATION is exactly what the LEGOŽ company wants us to do with their product. They, like SEAN provide ideas only to inspire our IMAGINATION! This is proof of it!

Here a "GLUG soda machine" (sticker is included) after all our minifigures need something to use their "GOLD COINS" for!

And my take on it for the Friends Set I did her on MOCpages HEALTH FOOD STORE! Showing you just how one can even do their own take on the models in Sean's book!

The back of the book giving us a bit about SEAN!
He's one of ten people in the world allowed to be called: A CERTIFIED LEGO DESIGNER!
It all began for him with just one brick!

Three cousins pose with SEAN's three books, this one COOL CITY, COOL ROBOTS and COOL CARS!
I will be buying COOL CARS next!
This version of Sean's take on the old LEGOŽ Idea Books convinced me to go onward with his books!
It will be a good entry point for all reading this review!

Sean autographing his LIME BICYCLE poster for a young visitor he also autographed his books!

As you can see from this picture! (and you didn't have to pay tax!)

A close up of COOL ROBOTS!

and an interior shot 4 u!

and one of COOL CARS!

an interior page 4 u 2 c!

Don't forget it started for SEAN when he was 11 years old! It doesn't matter what age you come to enjoy LEGO once you do it's in your system!
As one group here calls itself LEGOŽ it's an obsession!
This book will guide you in that obsession.
I wonder what SEAN's next book will be?

This is very cool! I especially like those stickers, even though they are always a pain when they are in sets! You made a great summary of the book.

I actually met Sean yesterday! It was at a local LEGO Contest and he was sponsoring and a judge. We chatted for a bit too. I also picked up his Robot's book for my brothers. He is a great guy.
