About this creation
EDIT: This was the winning entry for Christopher Baldacci's Great Lord of the Rings Contest! Thanks to Christopher for hosting the contest, and to all the judges for their scores and feedback. It's an honor to compete with such great builders, much less actually win a contest! A lot of the credit really goes to many of you. I've learned a lot from all the amazing creations here on MOCpages, and I hope to continually improve my skills, inspired by all of you. Thanks again and God bless!
This is my entry for Christopher Baldacci's Great Lord of the Rings Contest. When I first heard about the contest, it took me a while to come up with an idea of what to build. My first idea was to make the Council of Elrond from Rivendell, but I would have had to make a lot of custom figs, which would have been rather expensive. I had also recently been experimenting with making Gandalf in various scales (inspired by this). I tried doing him in miniland scale, and once I made the hat, I was sold.
I'm a little surprised that there aren't any other Lord of the Rings creations in miniland scale yet (that I know of). Hopefully this will inspire you to make some of your own! I've chosen the scene from The Fellowship of the Ring movie where Bilbo and Gandalf are sitting outside Bag End, smoking their pipes and enjoying each other's company for the first time in a long while. Here's the complete view of the MOC.

Here are a couple close-ups of Bilbo and Gandalf.

A closer look at the stone steps (one of the trickier parts of the build to pull off).

A somewhat artistic shot, I think.

I hope you've enjoyed it; thanks for looking!

I looked at it again,I forgot you were such a great builder! How did you do those steps?
Haha thanks, I'm glad you've remembered now. ;) Just wait until my next creation is finished (which will be very soon); it will probably top this! If I remember the step technique correctly, I used a 2x2 turntable plate under the top end of the steps (obviously with a pretty good-sized stack of bricks going up). The bottom end is just resting on tiles. The steps are reinforced underneath with more bricks, of course. |

I'm surprised that I never saw this before. The door is impressive, and the window looks amazing. The landscaping is excellent, and I really like all the texture in the ground. Your miniland figs are awesome, and I especially like Bilbo's shirt. Great work! |

Wow! I just watched the movies again and was even more blown away at how accurate this is!
Thanks, Ian! I want to watch them again soon, too, but I don't have 11-12 hours of free time just burning a hole in my pocket, unfortunately... :) |

WOW! I think, despite the flak, that the miniland figs are the best part of this. Here we go! (ACCURACY TO BOOK OR MOVIE) - The whole landscape and hole looks JUST like the first film. Way to go!: 29/30;(MINIFIGS) - : These are spectacular, I think the scale is fine. Only my only thing might be to adjust Gandalf's hands a bit. They look a little on the rigid side, while the rest of his body is capured in a totally natural pose. Kudos for that!: 17/20;(ORIGINALITY) - I mean, I never would of this!: 10/10;(CREATIVITY/TECHNIQUE) -Just a spectacular use of techniques, and I love the hobbit hole. There maybe could be some more detail involving the stairs, making them smoothed over or adding some knobs in the grassy slope: 31/35; (PICTURE QUALITY) - The sheet in the background is a little crumpled: 4/5; TOTAL: [91/100] Awesome job!
Thanks for the vote of confidence in the figs; personally, that's my favorite part, too. I'm not sure how I could adjust Gandalf's hands any, but OK. I agree, the steps could have been better, but I tried tiles on them and didn't like the look of it against the studs on the rest of the MOC, and that was about the only other idea I had for that. What do you mean by "knobs" in the grass? Anyway, thanks for the score, and thanks again for hosting the contest! |

Thanks for all the comments, and thank you for the scores from the judges so far! I just wanted to make a couple comments as far as the figs, though, as that seems to be what's losing me the most points. :)
I agree, I think the figs might be a little large for the rest of the build, but really not that much. Considering a hobbit at about 3-1/2 feet tall and Gandalf maybe about 6 feet, Gandalf should be quite a bit taller than a hobbit-sized door (or anything else hobbit-sized, for that matter). So Bilbo might still be a little big, but that's more because I couldn't really make him any smaller (he is standard-sized for a miniland child), and I couldn't make the door any bigger (those are the biggest arches there are).
Also, as far as the size of the figs relative to each other, keep in mind that since they are seated, the height difference is not as pronounced as it would be if they were standing. If they were standing, the height difference would be about twice as much, as Gandalf's legs are longer than Bilbo's.
Anyway, no big deal, but I thought I would give an explanation since I was getting some comments about that. |

great job! how did you connect the 1x1s to the door frame?
The top and bottom of the frame are just large tan arch bricks, and the studs on the 1x1 plates fit into the open space inside the arch. I saw it on other MOCs; I might not have thought of it myself otherwise... :P I've learned a lot from looking at other people's creations! |
