A master of darkness...a team of justice-seekers...a city in fear...Welcome to Olympia...
About this creation
In 1903, a massive conflict called the Great War occurred. This titanic struggle pitted the Americas and Oceania against the Eurasian Federation's imperialistic expansion. After a truce was established in 1907, the Americas and Oceania underwent a “Golden Age” of prosperity, with new innovations (such as the air-nought and ceramic fuel) entering use. The heavily damaged City of London was also re-named the City of Olympia, giving the battered metropolis a fresh start. Today, Olympia serves as the capitol of Oceania, which has led to its unprecedented growth in size, commerce traffic, and military power. Factories, posh manor houses, airships, and blocks of cloudscrapers fill the city. However, all is not right in Olympia: crime rates are rising, political corruption is becoming more evident, the economy is beginning to slow, and the resurgent Eurasian Federation has begun another arms race to challenge Oceania's regional might. Furthermore, mysterious events are occurring throughout the city: a military base is suddenly deserted, strange animals roam the sewers, a rouge warship causes havoc, and a strange figure makes an appearance here and there at night. It is in theses times of great trouble and mystery that one extraordinary man will form a team to search for the key to saving the city before it is too late.
The New Parliament, the governmental hub of Oceania. The original parliament building was destroyed in a catastrophic zeppelin raid. The New Parliament features a gold-topped dome and the Fire of Remembrance, a towering flame that honors those who died in the Great War. Despite all its grandeur, the New Parliament is home to much strife and bickering between politicians. The Cathedral of Glass is nearby, along with the white-domed University, the main college of the city.
The Ministry of Justice, just recently completed; it replaced the previous law enforcement building, which was destroyed in a fire after the war. The massive, sinister-looking structure is the headquarters to the region's enforcement agency, known as The Authority. Lately, The Authority’s heavy-handed tactics and rumors of corruption have tarnished its reputation.
The Steam-Works building is home to the international Steam Assembly, dedicated to the fields of practical science and engineering. The building is capped by a gold top, which is a symbol of the institution's accomplishments for Oceania. This honor is only given to the most esteemed institutions in the city.
The Colossus of Freedom represents the strength of the Oceanic Empire's citizens, from New Zealand to West Canada.
The busy Thames River, flowing slowly to the ocean as it has for centuries.
The kilometer-long Metalworks labors day and night to smelt old metals down for re-sale. The twin smelting pots can process up to 60,000 tons a day.
Kept aloft by a secret propulsion system, Floating Fortresses are massive, silent, and heavily armed battle platforms. Their main firepower is a ring of 50-cm (20-inch) guns located in the middle of each vessel; during combat, each gun is fired and then rotated away from the target to be reloaded, enabling the next gun in line to fire. This allows a Floating Fortress to lay down a constant barrage of shells, all the while being protected by heavy armor. Questions about the Floating Fortress project have been raised, specifically how the cash-strapped government managed to afford twenty-five of these war behemoths. There are also many that feel uneasy in having these terror weapons flying over Olympia, ostensibly to keep the city protected from eventual Eurasian aggression. The government has refused to answer any of these questions.
Victory Square, located in the heart of the Financial District. At the center of the square rests the towering Infinite Clock, powered by one of the first computing machines in history.
Power to the city is supplied by the Wellington Electrical Plant, which uses a combination of steam and electromagnets to generate electricity. However, much of Olympia (and by extension the rest of the world) is not yet electrified.
The Hard Quarters, a growing slum in south Olympia, surrounds a massive pile of rubble, a former weapons factory destroyed during the war. People have gone missing from the slums lately, but since the government believes most of the Slum dwellers to be criminals and illegal immigrants, no official investigation has been opened.
I've always been a massive fan of Steampunk MOCs, but my lack of “Fantasy” building skills always made it difficult for me to make Steampunk creations myself. All that changed when I discovered the Alternate History sub-genre of Steampunk, which is less fanciful and is more centered on the “what-ifs” of history. This is the perfect genre for me to build in, as I am a rabid historian and love alternate history novels.
This specific creation is a micro City of Olympia; it is meant to represent only a tiny chunk of the metropolis. It was challenging but fun for me to build in such a small scale; while it sure 'aint a Shannonia , I'm very happy with it. Stay tuned for more...
