This is the Volkswagen T1 Camper Van as I built it with LDD a few weeks ago. It's like a small version of the 10220 LEGO Model. The T1 Microbus ("Bulli" in German) is one of my favourite VWs.
About this creation
Finally my DESIGNbyME order has arrived and the T1 was one of the four models I ordered in the set. So now I have all the parts I needed to build the V2.1 of my T1 Camper Van as I had built it in LDD a few weeks ago.
Update October 27, 2011: I noticed on the photos (especially on the small ones) that the colour pattern for the V shape on the front looked better on the older model. So I changed that back:I also replaced the grey round plate by a silver one (compare to the photos below).
Side view: I changed the red 1x4 SNOT brackets on the front and the rear end by 2x2 Snot brackets to get rid of the gap under the bracket. This version also has the new side windows which allow the red part of the car to be one plate higher than on the last version (closer to the original colour scheme).
Rear left view: There is the new roof plate on the rear end (same as on the front).
Front view: I also added a popped up version of the roof on this model. I had changed the V shape on the front a bit with the red corners being one plate higher (later I changed that back, compare this photo to the ones above).
Rear view: Only the roof plate has changed.
Front view: Now some pictures with the closed pop up roof
Side view: The new side windows with SNOT black cheese wedges behind the roll bars.
Rear view. So that's this one for now. I hope you like it...
Credits: please take a look at the 4-wide T1 models built by Isaac, Dylan, Klingus and Ben and you'll find one or another detail I used on this model.
Update December 26, 2011: I must have been a good boy - Father Christmas has brought the "big brother" 10220 :-))
It took about 3:30 hours to built it. That was a lot of fun!
So this is V2.1 of my 4-wide LEGO Volkswagen T1 Camper Van
Quoting Larry Pan Just one question, is the roof held up by friction when it is up? It would be great if you replied as I desperately need ideas on how to build a retractable spoiler. :)
No, I have to admit that the roof doesn't "really" open, there are two interchangeble parts (an open and a closed one). So its simply a combination of jumper plates, plates and tiles. I forgot to add a picture with both roof elements, but you can see them in the LDD model: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/287471
Quoting MortalSwordsman . Hope you and your family had a great day. I went to my Wife's family's house yesterday and going to my Mum's house today for Christmas Day part II. Double the fun ;). Talk soon Mr O.
Yes, we had a great time, too. We went to my parent's house on Christmas Eve, next day we all had lunch at our place and today we were back at my parent's house. Three very cool days with the family :-)). Now I'm glad to have a quite evening with my girl.
Regarding "Big Brother". Wow that was fast, I haven't even opened mine. I foolishly started my GT40 on Christmas Eve so that will propably take over my life for the next week or so. I hope to start my Camper soon though. Hope you and your family had a great day. I went to my Wife's family's house yesterday and going to my Mum's house today for Christmas Day part II. Double the fun ;). Talk soon Mr O.
Quoting DeTomaso Pantera
I have a friendly suggestion, i noticed you can hardly see the tyres, maybe build a simple base for it so they stand out better and also change the wheels from white to silver.
I have a new grey background for the photos. With that one you can see the tires :-) The rims are the classic ones with a single stud, which (as far as i know) only were available in red and white. I tried to put round silver plates on the rims, but they look too thick.
Quoting Hot Rod
But, maybe, the extention of the Roof is a little too hight... only a suggestion!
It only works this way, if you want to have the identical thickness of the white parts on the two roof parts. Besides, with one plate less it doesn't look high enough. So, as we say in German: You have to die one of the deaths. ;-)
