In January 2012, the C64 turns 30.
About this creation
Now only a childhood memory of some grumpy old AFOLs, the C64 used to be an immense technological achievement especially in the areas of graphics and sound.

Do you still remember the startup screen of its built-in 10 kbyte BASIC interpreter?

Or bulky cathode ray tubes?

Or maybe even the joysticks which were also compatible with the Atari 2600?

Do you still know how to make a 5,25 inch floppy writable on both sides in the 1541?

But of course, the C64 did not run the Lego Digital Designer and could not have produced this model. So I guess, we are better off today...

Making Of

At a scale of approximately 1:4, this is almost life-sized compared with my other models. Many parts are - unfortunately - not available from pick-a-brick and might not even have been produced. However, for the special occasion I felt that a model in the Lego Universe mode of LDD would be fine. Specifically, I did not want to make any compromises regarding the color scheme.

Oh, the good old "bread box", that's so cool! And you even have a 1541 floppy disk drive and a Commodore screen with the start image :-)) Ah those "good old times"... That's a really cool microscale version of this iconic home computer, great job! :-)) P.S.: I used some nail scissors for the necessary cutout on the floppy disks ;-))

Great stuff, very well realised! The 64 was my first computer, and I still have a working one, albeit the later shape. Nothing like a good blast on Crazy Comets now and then ;)

If you donīt know them yet you should check out the band PPOT "press play on tape" the C64 revival band. BTW wonderful MOC, brings back memories (I guess this makes me a grumpy old AFOL).
