Need cover fire? The Grenadier would be more than obliged to give it.
About this creation
about two months ago it was decided that, with the Flea Support Mech becoming completely obsolete, a new support unit had to be developed. when an ally asked for a similar unit to be produced for him, we decided to kill two birds with one stone and build something that fit both the role of Support Mech and also had the specifications (namely small size, decent weaponry, and the ability to be used for deployment via orbital re-entry). unfortunately, those two birds were pretty far apart, and the stone simply flew between, hitting nothing and landing in a nearby lake. the Grenadier looked something like a metal box on two stubby legs and a pair of cannons that were far too big for such a small Mech. as for its performance, most Mech pilots preferred being tied up and stuck in a barrel where they were less vulnerable. and now, two months later, we decided to fish up that stone in the lake and give the birds another try. fortunately our client widened the parameters a bit, and, with some innovative new ideas to help, the stone killed about thirteen birds, then had them cooked and prepared for dinner.
the Grenadier Mk.II is designed perfectly for its job. made for providing cover fire to other units and just generally making a mess of whatever it's doing, the Grenadier is balanced between heavy weapons and heavy armor. any enemies stupid enough to peek over their cover will instantly get pounded into mashed potatoes by this beast's two dual heavy repeating laser cannons and grenade launchers. and should an enemy manage to snap off a shot before being blown clear to Coruscant, the Grenadier has more than enough armor to keep it well protected.

the Grenadier carries a pair of EG-491 Dual Heavy Repeating Laser Cannons. these nasty laser cannons pack as much punch per round as an E-Web, plus a faster rate of fire. take that, multiply it by four individual laser cannons, and you've got enough firepower to take down a medium Mech in a couple seconds. though not well suited for taking down anything really big, they're quite proficient at mowing down lines of infantry and light Mechs, which is exactly what the Grenadier was designed for.

just in case the Grenadier has a crowd control problem, we've equipped it with a pair of heavy-duty grenade launchers. though the grenade launchers are able to take quite a large variety of different grenades and rockets, the standard type used is a specialized proton grenade. if you know anything about proton grenades, you know they're probably the most destructive grenade/explosive charge in existence, packing about three times the explosive payload of a thermal detonator. this specialized variant is designed to spread its explosion horizontally instead of upward, catching more enemy units in its wave of destruction per round.

just in case the Grenadier runs into something its laser cannons and grenade launchers can't handle, we've equipped it with twelve short-range rockets, each stuffed full of pure detonite. though still not able to handle anything really big, these rockets are more than enough to topple almost anything they're fired at.

just a shot at the cockpit. a little note, if for some reason you can't open the cockpit, don't get frustrated. I designed the cockpit in sort of an odd way, and there are two separate parts that have to be opened. first you have to open up the light grey section in the middle, and then you can open the dark grey section with ease. I know it's annoying, but it was the only way the cockpit would work.

front and back view, as is pretty obvious.
you may be wondering why I didn't design the Grenadier II for orbital re-entry like my client asked. actually, I did. special deployment pods, based off the drop pods used by OL/D units, were created for the Grenadier. (sorry, I didn't REALLY make them. just use your imagination :P) also, if you look at the bottom of the Grenadier's laser cannons, you'll see these boxy things. those, along with the cylindrical things on the backs, are my first tries at giving my Mechs realistic ammunition. yes, from here on out, I intend to give ALL my Mechs "ammunition". probably means you can expect some kind of ammunition reloading Mech or something along those lines in the near future.

Heya, Zero! :D Actually, I happen to have a Mark III variant of the Grenadier built. It's got new weapons, a slightly different cockpit, and I switched the mounts for the rockets to Omnihub mounts (with the grey T-pieces) so that different weapons could be mounted there. Unfortunately even with these new features it's not really different enough to post yet. |

Now you're getting the swing of things. Looks good, though again, the Star Wars involvement kind of ruined it for me. Still, good looking unit, decent weaponry. Maybe some coloration? Racing stripes, something. Well, anyway, all my opinion, disregard if need be. ^Blub^
I'd probably not involve Star Wars in it, except that I'm putting together a storyline with most of my Mechs, this included, involved in it. personally I think this would be a lot better with machine guns or something. oh well, it still turned out well. and as nice as machine guns would have been, rapid-fire heavy laser cannons are still pretty awesome. and racing stripes? hmm... I'm not sure. this is supposed to be a realistic military-issue unit, and militaries typically don't put racing stripes on their vehicles. I might do sort of a custom unit with a special color scheme, though. |

I might try this in real life. this is, at least theoretically, one of my sturdier builds (obviously I don't actually know that, but the construction looks fairly sturdy). there is the slight problem that I have almost none of these bricks in my collection, but with Christmas coming that could change. and I'll look into your MOC. :) |

This thing is amazing! You made something very incredible this time. The legs look really nice along with the weapons. The cockpit idea is good as well, tough I imagined something like a hatch on the back or something. The overall design looks a bit like a mix of a Dreadnaught from WH40k and a Battlemech. Oh and there are mobile suits that step on people while blowing everything into dust, but those are mostly the grunts and appear only for seconds :P Nice job!
a hatch on the back? that's definitely a good idea. huh, I'll have to think about that. technically most of its key systems (power core, computer, etc.) are located in the back, but I could change that. |

I suppose that it would be typical to use reverse leg joints, but I always preferred the dog-leg style. I might try to incorporate that instead. And yes, big huge stompy western-style mechs usually do look epic. I think it's probably because shoulder-mounted grenade launchers and the like aren't really as believable on a skinnier frame.
yeah, you can just picture this thing in combat. its laser cannons are pounding away at ranks of infantry in their desperate charge. it unleashes a pair of proton grenades that detonate a short distance away and instantly vaporize a dozen soldiers. then it lifts up its foot and crunches down on a soldier that got too close for his own good. you just can't picture a Gundam or anything like that doing that kind of stuff. :P |

GREAT JOB ARIK!!! This baby is just so cool looking. But why'd you make it support mecha? I think it could stand by itself in a fight easily. Besides, larger mecha are more difficult to build and cost more money. Personally, I think support mecha should be the mainstay in futuristic wars.
Again, great job!
the reason I made it a support unit is because, while it can stand pretty well on its own, a single unit can be infinitely useful assisting large numbers of infantry move quickly and safely across the battlefield, and would also do well as a defensive unit. although I do agree, this thing really deserves some bigger guns and bigger jobs. I've already spotted about twenty dozen problems with the Grenadier, so I'll probably post a Mk.III soon that fixes these. and with it, I might make a variant of it designed for a different role. |

Quoting arik lego: I'd suggest trying a walker. they're typically a bit easier to build than most other Mechs, and usually look awesome too. the key characteristics of a walker are usually that 1. it lacks any human-ish features (like a head, arms, hands, etc.) and 2. its legs are usually reverse-joint (hence the nickname "chicken walker" that most walkers have). if you want an example, think of AT-STs and AT-RTs from Star Wars. those two rules don't always apply, but they almost always do.

I should really try my hand at this type of mech... Seems like it would be less hassle trying to get the arm articulation right. All I'd need is a single ball joint (or one of the Exo-Force joints) under each shoulder (like you did) and I wouldn't even have to worry about hands for weapon swapping.

Firstly: Woah, what a beast. Secondly: It is CBMC Classic compatable? At first glance I thought it was but after looking closer I'm not so sure (the computer I'm using ATT is too old for anything beyond LDD 3.0 so I can't open the file).
umm, not sure. I based it pretty heavily on Chunk's old Stalwart (not the TAM-X Stalwart, his older Stalwart Heavy Mech), and the frames are probably similar enough to be compatible. and the way it's designed should make it fairly compatible with other Mechs as well. I'm not really sure about the legs, though. I tried to make the legs with as much armor as possible, and they're kinda tight. hmm, maybe I should change the rocket pods to an omnihub mount. |
