Two Portraits of the Same Kid
From the Vintage 2011 Collection
About this creation
This was another piece commissioned as a Christmas gift, a 15x20" portrait. Still new at commissioned work, I have a process that I follow during construction, but I am still stumbling into issues as they present themselves.

In this instance, I was provided tons of images, but there weren't very many good ones ...the kid NEVER smiles for the camera! After finally settling on an image and drawing it, I received the thumbs up to build it. When the portrait was complete, I photographed it and sent it to the client for final approval before I started 'gluing'. I received approval to glue.

After about 20 minutes had passed, my phone rang and my client decided that she didn't like the colors in the portrait was too dark. This was supposed to be a Christmas gift (Christmas was about ten days away), though she said it would be fine, she didn't sound 100% happy. Rather than refunding money, or giving her something she wasn't entirely happy with, I offered to redraw and rebuild the portrait.

Needless to say, since I built two portraits, I wasn't sure which one to post. I decided the story was interesting enough to share, so it seemed appropriate to display BOTH portraits. The original portrait is below, it has the dark tan (I like it better). That means the final version is the lighter one, the main picture.

Again, I did a time-lapse photo montage and burned it to a playable DVD so they could see the building process. I made two videos too, but only presented them with the final piece.

As always, thank you for checking out my work. Please feel free to leave any questions or comments.

I guess that's what happens, people are funny. There's what YOU think looks the best, then what the client prefers. Not much different than the tooth business. Anyway, both look great!

They both look good, although the original one looks more realistic.

That sounds nightmarish. I think I prefer the original– the contrast between the skin and hair is a little less stark. Nice work on both though!
