Toothless the Nightfury version 2
About this creation

This is my second version of Toothless. If you don't know, Toothless is the main Dragon from Dreamworks How to Train your DRAGON. I have made this version with a harness and a prosthetic tail fin. I also made another attempt at a landscape. Its small but I really like the way it looks.

I tried to make the scene a little bit like Test Drive from the movie. This scene would have happened afterwards because Toothless has his red tail-fin.

I have built the harness using reins from the the Starwars Hoth sets. I rather like the way he looks with it on. Without the harness, Toothless cannot fly, so he wears it for most of the film.

I tried to make this moc look good as a desk decoration. It fits in well as a display in my room. I know it is not a huge build, but I am pleased with it. I have not been able to build landscapes well at all, so making a decent one is a big step for me.

Here are just some shots of Toothless without the display stand.

I added the tiny spikes on the back of his arm. I am starting to like minifig hands. They can be so useful when you are trying to build small. You have to look pretty close to see these spikes on Toothless in the movie, but they are there.

Here is a closer shot of Toothless's Tail-fin. Hiccup designs a prosthetic for the injured dragon during the film. When that tail-fin is lost, Gobber (an older viking) makes Hiccup a new one. This new one is red instead of brown. By the time of the Gift of the Nightfury short the tail is darkened from age and constant use. The bright red is a nice splash of color for this moc.

Here is the harness from the bottom. In the film it is made of leather and metal. That cord runs from a pedal hiccup uses to change gears to the prosthetic tail-fin. This allows Toothless to do complex air maneuvers.

Here is a little battle between Toothless and the Exterminator. I really did this to experiment with the purple cone pieces. I think it looks ok, but not great.

Toothless's fire is an acetylene/oxygen bolt. It is simi-solid and explodes on impact.

I think the Exterminator should move.

Well thanks for viewing. I know I didn't change much from the first one, but I really like the new Toothless. I hope you will rate and comment. I am pretty new, so your opinions and advice mean a lot to me. Bellow is a picture I am drawing of Toothless. If you haven't seen the movie, this is what his head looks like. Maybe I'll be able to finish this soon.

I will be posting the Timberjack next.

P.s. I looked to Stormbringer's Nightfury for inspiration on the head.

Thanks again!

Haha, yes, I think I found the file! I'll need to re-instal LDD to my new computer, and then I'll make a blog post in which you can get the instructions. Please note that I made some alterations when I got the set, so some things (like the long cord leading the the tail and the saddle) are not in these instructions. Still, hopefully this will give you an idea of what you need to do.

Thank You! The wait will be worth it ;) My little brother also likes dragons too, if you've seen dragons defenders of Berk he likes to dance to the end credits. Once again love the design!

Quoting Heidi England I LOVE IT!!! Ever since I first saw the movie I watched it over and over again, it drove my brother nuts XD Do you think you could send me instructions on how to build this (Don't worry I won't post it online and take credit) I've always wanted a lego toothless he's awesome! So is this how to train your dragon lego :D
Hmmmm... I designed this on an old computer... and I don't currently live with that computer anymore! However, if I remember, I'll try and find the file. It was made on Lego Digital Designer, so it might be tricky to give you exact instructions since that program has been discontinued. Maybe I'll make some instructions and post them on my blog, then I'll get you a link. May take me a while... sorry. Haha, but I am glad you like it! I too have driven many people nuts by talking a little too much about my favorite film of all time ;)

Wow! Toothless looks fantastic! I love the brick built head. I like the replacement section of tail too. I like how you have him posed fling past the mountain. Excellent work!

Kinda good, but can be improved. One way you could improve it is that the wings and tail are way too long.

that is very well built. you have also made very good details, but the wings might need to be a bit thinner. but it's still a great model.

I will forgive you for forgetting (just barely)! Thanks a lot for the comment. I am glad you have enjoyed my art work. I try and do legos like I do art, so if I do one poorly then the other seems to do poorly. Thanks for the encouragement!
Quoting Romany Woodhouse That's a great scene JD - I still think your Toothless' head looks awesome, and I love that you've built the harness and prosthesis. I'd forgotten about those from the movie (probably sacrilege, I know!). Really nice work. I almost forgot to say, your sketches and illustrations are brilliant, you've got a real talent there.

Quoting Deus Otiosus While not as good as Stormbringer's (what a shock!), there are improvements from the first version (and you actually dared to brickbuild the wings). Not perfect, but good and recognizable at first glance. Consider it finished, but work a bit on photography, curved background to eliminate the ground->wall transition line, lighting without flash...
Thanks for the photography advice. I know mine is not as good as stormbringer's but I have tried to do some new things with it. I think my body proportions are fairly accurate. Stormbringers head is a little big for his Nightfury (don't get me wrong his is absolutely breath taking, and you would have to be very picky to notice that). So I tried to make my Nightfury as anatomically correct as possible. I think I may have made Toothless slightly to big though! Oh well I am not trying to compete (if I was I would be doomed to failure)! I like my Toothless very much, and would probably not trade mine for his.
