My second entry into the Nova Refuge Vehicle Design Contest: The Makhaira light fighter. "Makhaira" was a type of ancient greek saber.
About this creation
A shot showing off the landing gear and the VTOL engine. Yes the landing gear is quite spindly in comparison to the rest of the ship, but then again so is the landing gear on a 747. The VTOL engine was made by attaching large wheel piece between two 6x1 arches. In real life it would be a tad further forward, but this is lego.
One of my favorite features of the Makhaira is the engine profile.
Triple rapid fire blazer guns. Designed to give unparalleled rate-of-fire in close quarters dog fighting while retaining good stopping power, the Makhaira's triple blazer guns can dispatch enemy fighters extremely quickly in close quarters. However, due to their extremely high heat production, they can only be fired in prolonged bursts before having to pause to vent excess heat. When fired in this manner the weapon tips take on an orange glow, similar to the brute spiker in Halo Reach.
Medium ranged laser canon. Slow firing with good range and stopping power, the Makhaira's laser cannons are its bread-and-butter weapons. Notice the only visible studs in the entire model are located on the laser cannons. I really wanted to pursue a studless model as most of the official Nova Refuge designs are studless.
The cockpit is quite cramped. I went through three possible versions of it and was unsatisfied until I came up with this concept, which I am immensely pleased with. The only thing that bothers me about the whole design is the canopy can't open... Oh and there's the slight issue with the vehicle lacking any type of control mechanism...
Inside shot showing the pins that hold the canopy.
The large radar dome at rear of the ship is "liberated" Victorian tech, reverse engineered by Zygbar technicians. While no longer state of the art, it can still keep up with the sensory tech commonly employed by Xarkon and Victory starships. The bumps on the wing tips are hard point mounts, used for mounting... stuff.
The most important aspect of a lego ship is its "swooshability", which this ship has in spades :)
The technic pins that hold the cockpit in place are surprisingly strong, to the point they can continue to support the cockpit when upside-down.
One of the main features of the Makhaira is its atmospheric VTOL ability. That is, Vertical Take Off and Landing. While most fighters have to remain above their stall speed to maintain atmospheric flight, the Makhaira is able to utilize that huge engine on its underside to maintain altitude while slow or stationary. This allows it to better support slower moving infantry or vehicles.
This shot shows the Makhaira's small targeting silhouette. Notice the radar dome is hidden completely from head on view, to prevent targeting.
And finally a shot of the S-foils. Because you don't need "wings" to fly in space :p
