Olympia: Episode Four
A master of darkness…a team of justice seekers…a city in fear…Welcome to Olympia…
About this creation
Mack the Machinist (or “Mack” for short) is a balding, grumpy mechanic from the heart of the industrial section of Olympia. A talented engineer and inventor, Mack served in the Oceanic Military as an artilleryman, which is how he gained his love for all things mechanical. After retiring from the military, Mack set up a small garage in Olympia, repairing machines and occasionally creating custom contraptions for high-paying customers. Although he appears surly and bitter, Mack has a close friend in Parker Pyne, whom he respects and trusts. He is also beginning to warm up to Willie Sparks, who reminds Mack of his younger, youthful days as a hot-shot kid.

Although he rarely gets involved in dangerous situations, Mack is known to keep a few custom firearms on hand. His Micro Discharger (on the left) is a hand-held weapon capable of rapidly firing bolts of charged electricity. Mack’s pride and joy, however, is his Galumper V2, a heavy, steam-powered weapon capable of hurling rivets at speeds high enough to punch through steel.

Journal entry 24
Date: October 15th, 1917
Location: Olympia

After the incident with the Jugger, Parker became convinced that the key to Olympia’s fate lay with the simple device recovered from the beast. Parker spent many hours analyzing the small contraption, but for once, his brilliant mind was at a loss. It was time, Parker decided, to bring another person into our confidence.

We headed to the industrial district of Olympia where Parker said an old friend of his worked. We soon found ourselves in front of a messy garage, littered with the debris of the mechanic’s trade. I was doubtful we’d get any useful information from a grungy steam-monkey, but Parker promised me that this man was the best engineer around. I shrugged and followed him into the open garage.

The fellow (Mack, his name was) looked older than both of us combined but you could tell he knew his way around a machine shop; Parker later told me that he served in the artillery branch during the 1870 Eurasian Crisis, which occurred when I was only a child. Mack met us with a grunt and after looking me over, immediately questioned Parker’s motives for bringing a ‘Yankee’ into his shop. Before I could knock the old codger’s head off, Parker stopped me with a frown, and told Mack of our endeavors to find the root of Olympia’s decline, and that we had recently recovered a strange device from our encounter with the Jugger. Despite himself, Mack was very impressed (“A fine bit of justice, you chaps did!”) and looked over the device that Parker handed him.

“Goodness gracious!” Mack exclaimed “What you got here is an electro-receiver! That scientist fellow who got killed – Tesla, I think his name is - was working on a project that used this device. What it does is take radio waves and transforms them into commands; I only know ‘bout it cause I’ve been trying to make one meeself.” There was dead silence. It was obvious now, Parker said, that whoever killed Tesla and stole his project must be responsible for the Jugger’s movements. But who could’ve done this?

Mack interjected and said there were rumors that a so-called "Doctor Disease" was making strange creatures in the Hard Quarters, Olympia’s primary slum. His lair was said to be under the old Asylum, where animals so hideous roamed, not even the bravest person approached it. Could this person be the master-mind of Olympia’s distress? Probably not, Parker theorized; if the rumors about this “doctor” were true, than he appeared insane, clever, and evil, but by no means a calculating, clear-minded individual. Still, it was a good start, so Parker and myself immediately agreed that we should pay this doctor “a house call”.

But Mack stopped us. “We can’t just march into this chap’s base o’ operations!” Mack said “He might have hundreds of his creations lurking about, and I doubt the three of us could take them all on. No, what we need is someone with unconventional combat skills, someone who has looked evil in the face before and not flinched, and above all else, someone who has a clear sense of justice and is willing to help us whatever the cost.”

I snorted that it would be impossible to find a man like that. Mack merely smiled. “You’re right: I don’t know of any men like that. But the person I have in mind is not a man…”
