About this creation

After taking a break from lego for several years, i found myself living close to a Lego store for the first time. As a moving present i brought myself this model. The last lego model i had purchased was the 1992 off roader.

After building the model i was impressed with the body detailing and some of the new parts (new short wishbones, beveled differential) but i was disappointed with the suspension the model used. Out front there was only a single shock between both wheels, and out back it had a solid axel. I decided to try and improve the model using pieces form the off roader (8466).

I set out to improve the front and rear suspension (fully independent, with rear drive), while keeping as close as possible to the original models dimensions.

Good points:

Iím very happy with the front end, i was able to extend what was there with only a change of a few parts and a new steering rack. I also like how the shocks are connected to the engine support separate to the body. This setup has little flex which improves the suspension performance.

The back end of the off roader is way to wide. The 6.5 hole wishbones combined with a central diff are much wider than the original body. This makes the model look a little odd and out of scale. I am considering extending the wheel archs outwards to see if this will compensate. I have some 6 hole wishbones (from set 8070) so i will rebuild the backend slightly narrower soon.

Take a look at some of my modifications to see if you you can narrow the rear axle a bit.
