My chosen event in history is the Taman Shud Case, or The Somerton Man. The story is simple, eerie, and utterly inexplicable. The body of an unidentified man was found on Somerton beach in Adelaide, Australia at 6:30 AM on December first, 1948. The cause of death is still under question, though the piece of paper torn from a copy of The Rubiyat (reading simply "taman shud," or "ended") seems to indicate suicide by untraceable poison.
There are several other interesting factors to the case, which can be found on the wikipedia article linked above. I've summarized the main points here for you, however.
The seagull effect was created by running a long piece of scotch tape between two supports off-camera. By taking the shot at the right angle and lowering the exposure a bit they appear to float. Note that I did edit it in this case since the lighting was awful, they weren't in the right place, and after a full day of shooting I was tired enough that splicing two images (the scene and the seagulls) was easier than retaking everything. Nothing else was touched.
To be honest, I was pretty happy with how this turned out and had nice pictures taken and ready to upload. Then I asked my team for last minute suggestions and they came up with an entire list, including the brilliant (though initially joking) remark about adding seagulls. I sucked up my pride and went back to building, and the result is infinitely better than what you would have seen instead. Huge thanks to the entirety of Team Jigsaw for their support and comments!
Here's a reference picture of the beach. Note that my creation is based off a time earlier that morning, before the body was found. The large black X was drawn on the photograph for newspapers to indicate where the body was.
Great build, definitely has an eerie atmosphere in your photos. I would say though that it is more of a mystery how ppl live in Adelaide than anyone dying there... nah, i'm just kidding Adelaidians! At least you have Pandas! ;)
I love a great mystery, and an excellent build. Thanks for bringing this case to my attention. Speaking of attention...your attention to detail is superb....such as the missing railing in the build which matches the photo. Great work! Score= 5
