I chose the Myths and Legends category for the MOCathalon and did the Abduction of Persephone. Our group name is the MOCers of Middle-Earth. I was extatic when I saw that Mythology was one of the categories for the MOCathalon, so I thank Chris and all the other judges for that.
Persephone goddess of flowers and daughter of Demeter, was walking through a field one day when Hades came up out of the ground and abducted her. He brought her to the underworld to be his wife. When she was there Hades had her eat a pomegranate seed. Demeter was greatly distressed by this and pleaded with Zeus to interfere, but he refused. Because of this, Demeter stopped all harvest and agriculture (for that is what she is goddess of) and famine broke out all over the world. This got Zeus to intervene and he made Hades let Persephone go, but because she had eaten the seed, she had to stay in the underworld for 1 third of every year, during that time, the world would go barren and without flower.
Here is Hades in his Chariot.
