Italian Heavy Cruiser Fiume 1/200th Scale
Ok, so with my finals over, it's time to upload more ships! This here is the heavy cruiser Fiume, of the Italian Zara class. The Zaras were considered as one of the best designs built under the limitations of the Washington naval treaty. They managed to fit considerable protection (against 8" weapons), but at the cost of superstructure and torpedo tubes. Like most Italian cruisers, their seaplane arrangements are carried on the bow. The four ships of the class--Zara, Fiume, Gorizia, and Pola--are named for cities along the Croatian coastline. Fiume's motto "Sic indeficienter virtus" was derived from its namesake city's motto that dated back to the 17th century! Unfortunately, three of the class were lost in a single night, being wastefully surprised by the British battleships Barham, Valiant and Warspite. Gorizia managed to survive the war, however.
About this creation
Probably the most striking part of Italian ships is the rather extravagant bow recognition marks, meant to protect the ships from friendly aircraft. Fiume is also the most extensive camouflage I've built. As always, the scale remains 1/200th scale, so the model is right at 3 feet long. As with my last few builds, the upper hull simply rests on the lower hull so it's easily displayed as full hull or waterline. Most of the details are held on by gravity only. My previous design for the ships boats and launches was overscale, so I've moved that down a bit.

One of my favorite parts of this model: the R.O. 43 float plane. This was inspired by the aircraft on Kevin Bennett's HMS Counselor ( It's ever so slightly over-scale, but gets the point across.

Underneath the red and white paint lie the aircraft hangar and catapult. I feel this turned out really well, though a bit hard to pick up in the pictures.

And everything pulled off!

Excellent as always! I built a miniscale Pola two weeks ago, but I wanted to post something else first, so you were faster... I guess I'll try to add some coastline details to make my smaller sister get some attention too... Anyway, I love the airplane and the way you've managed to handle the stripes, the whole camouflage is also attractive and well executed, so this is altogether a very nice build.

Wow, the detailing is amazing! It's funny, my finals are over too, and I just added a destroyer. Anyway, keep up the great work.
