Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear?! SNAAAAAAKE!!!
About this creation

It has been over 10 years since I started making custom minifigs, and exactly 25 years since the release of the first Metal Gear. I decided to celebrate both of these dates by updating my first video game-based custom minifigs: the characters of Metal Gear Solid! Below you can compare my new minifigs with the originals from 2002, and see how far I've come. Enjoy!

(NOTE: Credit to David McNeely for coming up with the exclamation point idea first)

To begin, here is my updated Solid Snake compared with the original. I was going to go with a dark/sand blue color scheme, but the dark/light grey just worked better, especially since LEGO's new grey is slightly bluish now anyway. I also added dark shadows under the eyes to match the look of the classic MGS characters, who basically had shadows in place of eyes.

You're probably wondering why the image of the old 'fig is so small. Well, at the time, my computer monitor had a tiny resolution compared to the HD images of today, so I thought this was big enough! Also, back then I just lay the minifigs in a scanner to create images of them, rather than taking photos.

Solid and Liquid Snake: the Twin Snakes! Ugh, "the Twin Snakes"... What a terrible remake of a classic game. Do yourself a favor and play the original MGS for the true experience. It's even available on PC, you know!

Frank Jaeger, Gray Fox: the Cyborg Ninja. An iconic character from a masterpiece game.

You know, I have to admit that my love of Metal Gear Solid has waned over the years, especially since MGS4: Guns of the Patriots pretty much ruined the story for me. It just went too far. Still, nothing can ever diminish the original Metal Gear Solid. It's truly a masterpiece of the medium, and every gamer should experience it.

I should probably have repainted old Ocelot's hair again, but meh. You know, he was always one of my favorite custom minifigs from the very beginning. I'm still very fond of this old gif I made:

"Who are you?!"

"I am like you... I have no name."

Psycho Mantis. I didn't modify him too much. You know, it's a shame ol' Mantis only got one boss fight, when pretty much every other character in MGS got at least two.

One thing MGS did right was the classic boss fight. Some of the boss encounters in that game are unforgettable. I have heard some people today complain that stealth games should not have boss fights because they are not based around stealth, but around action, thus changing the genre and forcing the player to suddenly develop a whole new set of skills instead of using the ones he has learned through the rest of the game. This makes them very difficult for some players.

Me, I say that's exactly why we DO need boss fights. They change things up, force the player to adapt, and can be a real challenge. Boss fights friggin' rule, and I hate seeing them disappear in modern games.

Sniper Wolf. Don't be too hard on my old minifigs' guns. They were made before Brickarms was even around!

Vulcan Raven, giant and shaman. Who also has a very big gun.

Well, that's everyone! In closing, please enjoy this wallpaper-sized version of the above image in 1920 x 1080. Happy anniversary, Metal Gear, and here's to 10 more years of custom minifigs!

Great work! Gonna check your other stuff to see if you've done a (totally unrelated but also awesome) figure for Juggernaut from X-Men!

Great figs. The funny thing is, just about a week ago, DeviantArt announced a contest for people to take an old piece of theirs, and remake it with all the skills they now have, just like you did here :D And long live the MGS series

Yeah, MGS minifigs! The cover you made for this just had to be like this, Snake hiding under a box!
