The sword of Bilbo Baggins, and later Frodo Baggins, as depicted in "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" (2012).
About this creation
‘Somehow the killing of the giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark without the help of the wizard or the dwarves or of anyone else, made a great difference to Mr. Baggins. He felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach, as he wiped his sword on the grass and put it back into its sheath. “I will give you a name,” he said to it, “and I shall call you Sting.”’ (The Hobbit)
Before An Unexpected Journey came out in theaters, I wanted to celebrate the new film-adaptation of Tolkien’s classic novel with a full-scale replica of Sting, the sword of Bilbo Baggins. An elvish dagger crafted in Gondolin for the Goblin Wars, the weapon was found by Bilbo in the trolls’ cave and served as an excellent short sword for the small hobbit; with it, Bilbo fended off both Gollum and the spiders of Mirkwood, and he would later entrust it to his nephew, Frodo, in "The Lord of the Rings."
“The blade glows blue when orcs are close, and it’s times like that, my lad, when you have to be extra careful.” (From the 2001 film-adaptation of "The Fellowship of the Ring")
The scabbard incorporates an official LEGO keychain element (found in the 851627 Keychain Name Kit) so that I can wear the sword on my waist. (The movie sheath used a leather strap, but I didn’t want to attempt this with LEGO elements.)
One thing I should mention is that, as this is Sting from "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," the sword does not feature any elvish runes decorating the base of the blade like it does in the LotR movie trilogy. Bilbo would have the blade engraved later on before giving it to Frodo in Rivendell.
[Overall Dimensions: 22” long and 4.5” wide. Overall Weight: 6.2 oz. First Completed on October 14, 2012.]
With only a little friction, the blade easily slides into the sheath for protection and carrying convenience. The scabbard, despite its built-in decorative designs, is very durable.
Thanks to all of my fellow LEGO and LotR fans for making Sting one of my most popular creations; I really appreciate all your thoughtful comments and ratings!
Update: I've now created a set of step-by-step building instructions for my replica Sting sword and scabbard from 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.' The digital instructions consist of three main PDF documents on a CD that I am now distributing for $15 USD on Ebay.
