1215AD, 15 June, Runnymead. King John meets his barons and is forced to sign the Magna Carta (The Great Charter in English). The barons and church have become unsettled and wish to re-balance power between the king and his subjects.
Magna Carta was doomed to failure and lasted less than three months. King John soon had the rebels' backs to the wall and recaptured Rochester Castle by November 1215. King John died
John's son Henry was claimed as King Henry III and Magna Carta was reissued.
The Magna Carta is considered the founding document of English liberties and consequently American liberties.
