NCS Lunar Trike and Tracking Station
Built for the Classic space pocket money contest. A lunar trike arriving at a satellite tracking station, and two alternate models as seen on the back of actual classic space boxes.
About this creation

Built for the Classic Space Pocket Money Contest!
This build is 99 pieces + 1 minifigure (Which counts as one piece for the purposes of this contest) for a grand total of exactly 100 pieces! The build is a lunar trike used for travel to a satellite tracking station on a far off moon.

The back of the box shown above displays the two alternate models. Front views (top) and back views (bottom) .

The main build! Who wouldn't want to drive one of those trikes?

Alternate #1: A planet surface skimmer. Great for bumpy terrain!

Alternate #2: A man-able high-range radar dish for the tracking of celestial bodies!

Thanks so much David Roberts and David Alexander Smith for this contest! I had a lot of fun trying to build in my usual style, while still keeping it under the size limit! Good luck everyone, and cheers!

A great pair of models for the main build. The trike looks light and fast. You can easily imagine that the trans-yellow windscreen is necessary for keeping the moon grit off the driver as he bounces across the craters. The tracking station is full of interesting, technical “stuff”. My only concern is that its base is a bit small. I hope that the spacemen bolt it securely to the floor! 9 The skimmer for alternate #1 looks even faster than the Lunar Trike. It would be great fun to swoosh along but this might cause problems as some of the joints look a bit weak for the rigours of play. Alternate #2 would be a wonderful MOC to have in a corner of a CS moonbase. I like how the sides of the headrest could be headphones, channelling the signals from space. 9 The trike looks great for bouncing over rough terrain or just zooming across the sitting room floor but I think that, without an extra strut to support the front forks, things would quickly collapse. The tracking antenna is brilliantly enigmatic in that CS way. The lights and dishes must have a function but what exactly? That’s left to the imagination of the child. It would have been great if the tracking station had something that extended or folded out. 7 A great development of the CS theme. I like how you’ve stuck to the original grey scheme but used angles, textures and parts in interesting ways (skids & Technic cogs) to break things up visually. The trike is a nice move on from the four (& more) wheeled buggies of Classic Space too. It red hubs stick to the CS scheme but are different and interesting too. My sole quibble is that the Trike is probably a bit delicate to be a set for kids to play with. 9 Total score 34.

Design: I know your MOCs well and consider you a master of the CS art. You didn’t disappoint. This is a stunning creation. The design realisation of the radar dish is one of the best I’ve seen. The lunar trike is an original and fun alternative to the rover. Every piece harnessed in the creation of believable vehicles. 10 Piece Selection: Two great alternatives. Almost as good as the original. The manned version of the radar dish is especially nice. 9 Playability: The two elements work well together, and provide room for many adventures. No clever detaching parts etc. stop this reaching the top score. 9 CS Factor: Perfect CS theme, which takes the original theme further than the first designers. 10

With all those dishes and hinges, this set would have been at the top of my christmas list in 1989.
